Directors Pay Big Share of Metro Securities Settlement
Ten directors of the Metropolitan Securities Company contribute 1.5 million toward a 5.5 million settlement to the receiver of the New York City Railway Company. John D. Floyd Wallace Varney, twenty, an electrician with Western Electric, drowned in the East Side Y M C A gymnasium swimming tank at 153 East 86th Street. He reportedly entered when unsupervised and could not swim. Harry McDonough found him, Chauncey B. Lewis removed the body, and after an hour of resuscitation a physician declared death by drowning. Coroner’s Physician Lehane issued an accidental death certificate.
