Tobacco Trust Denies Night Rides Disturbances in Kentucky and Tennessee
The American Tobacco Company issued an official statement denying responsibility for night rides and disturbances in tobacco growing regions of Kentucky and Tennessee. It claims most disorder occurs where dark fired tobacco is grown, cites regional production shares, denies any agreement with growers, and notes current prices are higher than a decade ago. A government investigation has pressured the company to open documents as court-ordered. Cincinnati hosts sessions of the government’s suit to dissolve the trust.

Banks granted time to retire Clearing House loan certificates
Clearing House Committee and bankers discussed the status of three banks holding Clearing House loan certificates totaling just over 6 million dollars. They agreed to allow extended time for retirement but not issue new certificates, with one bank expected to retire today and another by week’s end. Rumors of voluntary liquidation of small banks followed the National Bank of North America closure, though authorities say there is no present need for such action. The delay may postpone the weekly bank statement resumption planned for February 5.
