Fire menaces big area fire near Bleecker Mott corner

A seven story brick building at Bleecker and Mott streets burned last night, four alarms issued, flames rose fifty feet, endangering nearby tenements and the Church of Our Lady of Mercy. Firemen fought for hours, backdraft and roof fires controlled, damage estimated at $50,000. Priest rescue valuables from the church vestry as crowds gathered.

Summons Issued In Assault Case Involving Jerome Hoeber Note

John MurrayING the coroner s office obtained a summons for District Attorney Jerome to appear in Centre Street court at 10 a m to answer an assault charge. Jerome said he would attend on time and claimed he did not strike Murray. Coroners criticized Jerome s conduct at inquests and sought guidance from Corporation Counsel Rives. McGrath remained in Tombs with a habeas corpus writ directing his appearance and a certiorari against Coroner Goldenkranz to produce records.
