Washington January 26 The Supreme Court sustains the constitutional right of employers to require renunciation of union affiliations as a condition of employment. The decision nullifies the Kann Kuierciol statute and upholds an employer’s power to dismiss workers who do not withdraw from unions. Justice Day, with Justices Hughes and Holmes dissenting, notes similar laws in thirteen states and Puerto Rico. The ruling cites legal precedent that unions may deny membership to noncompliant workers, and employers may insist employees reject nonunion ties during employment. Other states cited as invalidated include California Colorado Connecticut Indiana Massachusetts Minnesota New Hampshire New York Oklahoma Oregon Vermont Wisconsin and Porto Rico Puerto Rico
A truck owned by C Williams & Co crashed onto the sidewalk at 22nd and Eighth, striking William Abbott 76 and Mrs Anns Nordgreen 60. Abbott suffered a fractured skull and a broken arm, Nordgreen had a crushed leg and internal injuries. Nordgreen's leg was amputated. Driver Howes Simms of Hudson and Thomas was arrested.
A yacht named Idler, owned by Warne Pennsylvania resident 4 P Jefferson, sank fourteen miles southeast of Cape Hatteras after running onto shoals. Captain Harding commanded the vessel. all aboard were believed lost from Jefferson’s party en route for a scientific cruise in the Southern Pacific. The Seminole cutter arrived too late for rescue. Jefferson heads Wells & Co. and is connected with scientific societies.
The East and West joined by a historic transcontinental call as Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas A. Watson spoke from New York to San Francisco. Mayors Mitchel and Rolph heard each other, while Theodore Vail and AT&T leaders praised the achievement linking major cities by the human voice. The milestone showcased 4100 miles of wire with voices traveling vast distances and signaling closer commercial and civic ties.
