In New York a kidnapping plot aimed at a woman led to a fatal subway incident. A woman identified as Charlotte Gronefoury, 44, of Brooklyn, was found across the Broadway line tracks near 137th Street and died at Knickerbocker Hospital. Police contend four men attempted to chloroform the victim. a sister witness and others reported conflicting details. A second case involved a woman at 72nd Street station attempting self harm after claiming to be My Brown, claiming a marriage to a well known businessman. Police noted no train contact with the first victim.
The Morgan liner El Valle reported rescuing the commander and nine crewmen from the four masted schooner Mary L. Baxter eighty five miles north by east of Diamond Shoals after it was wrecked and dismasted in a sixty mile northeast gale bound from Galveston to New York. The Baxters crew reached safety at New York.
A crosstown street car hit a Lyons Express Company truck on 149th Street and Brooksy, releasing about four dozen animals including eighteen monkeys and thirteen dogs from theater crates. Thirty passengers joined a chase as monkeys were rounded up. Paul Alexander of 244 Wentitt suffered internal injuries and was taken to Lincoln Hospital.
A night of sleet and ice left many pedestrians injured and several cars colliding on Staten Island. Patrolman Sieinel Potter was fatally injured when a skid struck him near Richmond Road and Newbury Avenue. Tony Pinto of Brooklyn was unhurt but his car fled after striking a sidewalkless area. John Murphy and others were also treated after separate incidents, with emergency crews racing to Reception Hospital.
Billy Sunday delivered a dramatic Philadelphia sermon on January 24 praising his campaigns and denouncing alcohol. He reported 213 converts at the first service, 607 at the afternoon, and 623 at the evening, urging prohibition while attacking corrupt politicians. He retold stories of Clarkson and Kelly and closed with a dramatic collapse on the platform amid cheers for safety.
In the gray dawn yesterday Hasty K Thaw, buoyed by cheering crowds, returned to the Tombs after 17 months liberty past, smiling through a prison transition. He spoke jokingly with reporters, praised Jerome, and prepared for an arraignment on a conspiracy charge as his lawyers face a clash over sanity and legal strategy. Rome reports Dr N Guenadier former Bulgarian foreign minister says Italy and Bulgaria will defend their interests and Balkan equilibrium to secure a lasting European peace. He traces war origins to the second Balkan War and rivalries among Austria and Russia, with Italy aiming to respect nationality.
Pretoria via London reports 1200 rebels led by Mariie and Kemp attacked Upingts Bechuanaland. Rebels retired after suffering twelve dead, twenty-three wounded and ninety-six prisoners. Union of South Africa forces endured three dead and twenty-two wounded.
