Chicago on January 20th saw a deadly disaster as a dynamite explosion and lake ice trapped and burned or drowned at least fifty three of the ninety five to a hundred workers on a submarine water tunnel crib a mile and a half from shore. Rescue boats battled ice floes while the South Side hospitals filled with injured men and a formal inquest began.
