In a sworn denial the author rebuts charges of accepting $1.00 to influence Fremont bonds placed on the Paris Bourse. He asserts he never received or was offered money and explains that the bonds were listed before his arrival in France in spring 19xx. He says he warned about fraud and Congress printed his correspondence. Fremont published a pamphlet attacking him for exposing the matter.
Albany Feb 11 The Assembly approved the Costigan bill for a third reading amid a fierce party line clash. Republicans charged the measure with tampering for political gain while Democrats defended democracy and attacked Tweed era power. The vote was 67 to 59 with strong New York City interest shaping the debate and a bleak Senate outlook referenced.
The French assembly debates a constitutional bill letting senators be elected by the same electors as deputies. Supporters include Left and Bonapartists. abstentions high. A General resignation rumor surrounds the Thirty Committee as concessions are tentatively considered.
