A mounted posse and police from Mount Vernon combed the Tuckahoe woods last night for Kit Reed who fatally shot Ferdinand Klepfer at Thomas Harrigan's road house near Union Corners. Reed, drinking and ill tempered, attacked patrons and fired at the Klepfer family before fleeing into the woods.
A bitter dispute between John C. Sheehan and Borough President Cantor erupted at Cantor’s cabinet meeting in City Hall. Cantor condemned department heads for allowing Sheehan allies direct appointments, ordering future hires to go through his office and for heads to report names instead of acting on informal leads. The meeting stretched five hours with Public Works Commissioner Livingston and other bureau chiefs present. Cantor may attend Sheehan’s Tuesday Sherry's dinner, while allies say Cantor defends his prerogatives, not challenging Sheehan’s aims.
Fourteen year old Benjamin Burnell of Hudson Avenue near Third Street Guttenburg was fatally injured when his sled ran under a car on a steep hill used by neighborhood coasters. Newman at the foot waved a red lantern as the car approached, warnings were given, but Burnell could not avoid the vehicle and was dragged thirty feet before the car stopped. He died at North Hudson Hospital Union Hill New Jersey.
President’s son Theodore Roosevelt Jr remains comfortable under physician care at Groton School in Groton Massachusetts. Mrs Roosevelt arrived from Washington and stayed by her son’s bedside as news was carefully controlled for public release. The boy’s condition shows no change for better or worse and no outside demonstrations occurred as the family received assistance from Groton officials and patrons.
President Roosevelt departed Washington by special train at 12:10 a.m. toward Groton Massachusetts to be near his son Theodore who is seriously ill with pneumonia. He travels with Secretary Cortelyou and a clerk and plans rapid return if Theodore’s condition worsens.
August Belmont, president of the Rapid Transit Subway Construction Company, declares there is no foundation for rumors tying the rapid transit system to a securities firm lease or merger. He says the company will operate its road once completed and will not negotiate disposal. He calls such rumors a breach of trust toward the company and the Rapid Transit Commission.
Brussels dispatch reports Boer delegates have agreed to the conditions in Lord Lansdowne's note to the Dutch Government and plan to request permission from Britain to visit South Africa. The request is expected to reach England next week.
A Utrecht dispatch reports possible removal of Boer headquarters to Geneva due to friction between Kruger and the Dutch government. Dr Leyds says Kuyper peace proposals are unwarranted interference with the Transvaal. Some Boer delegates reportedly disagree with Leyds. New York to St Augustine limited service advertised with travel route via Pinehurst and Southern Pines.
Daniel W. Baker Jr. son of the late Newark controller was killed when a trolley on the Elizabeth line struck him at Green and Broad streets Newark. He walked into the car while a setter was near and was crushed under the motor case. Motorman Michael Barron faced manslaughter charges. no witnesses found.
At midnight in Groton Mass residents were told there was no cause for alarm over Theodore Roosevelt Jr's condition. The lad's health was slightly improved with no deterioration that would require the President's presence.
Charleston, Feb 8 The abandonment of the President's proposed visit saddens all circles. Plans for a splendid reception and a grand Charleston episode are scrapped as the President was set to be the central figure of the program.
Edward OConnell and his wife Margaret with five children, including a three week old infant, slept on a sidewalk outside 2,087 Second Ave after eviction for unpaid rent. Neighbors bought furniture for 10 dollars. Four children were hospitalized at Harlem Hospital after exposure. the rest received charity care. Florida ad copy follows.
The Lokal Anzeiger claimed the Cramps plan a German shipyard at Stettin and Kiel with Sir Edward Reed and Berlin bank support and to bid on war vessels, merchant ships, and yachts. Charles H Cramp denied the report, calling it baseless and saying no European plant is being considered.
Peking on February 8 reports the Chinese Government has dismissed all European professors from the Imperial University. The president Mr Martin was offered a subordinate post. The article notes the term university is a misnomer with instruction focused on languages and elementary branches, while China says elementary schools are more needed.

The cold front pushed temperatures from 22 above to 15 degrees, with subzero readings north of the city. Electric car service halted and steam railways delayed by four to five hours. Rome Watertown and Ogdensburg line struggles to stay open as through trains struggle to pass.
