Damara Steamer Strikes Rocks Near Musquodoboit
Halifax Feb 7 The ocean steamer Damara of the Furness Line ran onto Musquodoboit rocks and is believed to founder with many lives lost. The first officer and eighteen crew survived in a lifeboat at Pleasant Point after a brutal battle with wind and frigid seas. Captain Gorst, four passengers, and the rest of the crew unknown, feared perished. Survivors describe a gale with the thermometer ten degrees below zero and a blizzard. the ship struck, a large hole opened in the bow, and the vessel broke from stem to stern. Tugs were sent to search for survivors and any wreckage. The Damara left Liverpool January 24 for Halifax and Struck Musquodoboit Ledge five miles from shore.
