The square rigged brig L. Schepp ran aground on a reef off Long Beach yesterday morning. Two life saving crews battled freezing conditions all day to save the men lashed to the rigging, feared to perish by morning. The Cavour’s tugs foundered returning to harbor while the Barcelona rescued fourteen crew members as gale and snow disrupted traffic across Northern and Western New York.

A Sunday afternoon gale of seventy two knots drove two New York tugs, the Edward J. Berwind and the E. B. Atwood, eleven miles east of Sandy Hook Light. Both crews of seven men were rescued by the German steamer Barcelona, Captain C. W. Bohn, before the tugs sank. The Hamburg America Line steamer Phoenicia, passing nearby, saw the distress signals but did not respond, its captain saying he did not know the signals.
