Silver Fluctuations Hurt Trade Across China and Asia

A batch of consular reports to the National Monetary Commission shows silver price swings have strained business in China and other parts of the Orient. In China, where silver is the standard, imports and profits depend on exchange rates, while Japan, on a gold standard, reports no similar turmoil. Officials note exports may rise with a low exchange, but overall business has faced embarrassment as silver depreciates, affecting both importers and consumers, with calls for China to adopt a gold standard.
