Dispatches report the arrival of Evans's battleship fleet at Trinidad. The vessels anchored five miles off Port of Spain this afternoon in Washington.
The New York Republican Club endorsed Charles Evans Hughes for the 1908 presidency by a large majority at a special meeting. A substitute by Job E. Hedges aimed to temper the endorsement, prompting sharp debate about bandwagoning and the path to Chicago.
George H. Worthington of Cleveland acquired a blue paper postmaster's provisional stamp from Alexandria dated 1847 for about 4000 dollars. Previously known copies on buff paper numbered three or four. The stamp came from an Alexandria resident’s letter via Mrs. M. Fawcett and a Boston dealer before Philadelphia dealer sale. Experts expect it could fetch at least 5000 dollars abroad.
Civic reformers led by City Club and Citizens Union ally to challenge John F. Ahearn after his re election as Borough President. A 15 member committee will seek Governor removal and push for Charter changes to weaken the Board of Aldermen, while plans for a united action against Ahearn unfold at the Manhattan conference.
A Hamburg passenger from Genoa said Richard Croker's elder brother works at a tiny railway station in Ireland under agent Hutchins. The brother, a Protestant, is estranged from Richard over religious beliefs. He reportedly has not sought aid from, nor would accept it from, his sibling.
In London Albert Hall more than seven hundred veterans, including twelve hundred on War Office rolls, gathered to commemorate the Indian mutiny's golden jubilee. Lord Roberts reviewed them as medals sparkled, a telegram from the King read, and Lord Curzon toasted survivors while Lewis Waller recited Kipling verses.
Charles A. Martin of Arcola New Jersey was shot by a highwayman after a demand for money. The Italian attacker fled as Martin, son in law of township official John Zabriskie, was taken to Hackensack Hospital in critical condition. A townwide search followed from Hackensack to trolley terminals along the Arcola Road.
Helen Maloney daughter of Martin Maloney of New York and Philadelphia is staying at Lakewood at her sister Mrs Carberry Ritchie's home. She was seen with Mrs Ritchie at 10 o'clock mass at St Mary of the Lake. Mr and Mrs Maloney and Mr and Mrs Ritchie and Miss Maloney are with her.
Judge Phillips of the federal Court of Appeals condemns inattention to explicit rules as a cause of railway disasters. The decision denies rehearing of the $15 000 verdict against Missouri Kansas & Texas Railway from the Katy Flyer wreck at Lewis Station Missouri on September 23 1904.
Goldfield Nev Dec 23 mine owners press President for keeping troops, citing a miners union attempt to deport workers with rifles. Sheriff Ingalls seeks fifty deputies for patrols as plans for post departure order are discussed. A suit by the Goldfield Mine Owners Association against the Western Federation of Miners is to be filed Dec 26 seeking an injunction against union interference.
Washington reports the White House will recall regulars from Goldfield next Monday unless Nevada proves it can maintain order. Senator Nixon says Western Federation of Miners will be expelled. Nevada may form a state police as federal troops depart.
Hartford, Dec. 23 Special. Miss Ellen M. Case, a wealthy philanthropist, cut the Union for Home Work from her will after receiving rear balcony seats for a performance of School at Parsons Theatre by the Friendly Visitors. Her bequest memo shows the union named for $10,000 and as residuary legatee. overall gifts exceed $100,000 for charity.
Captain W McKenzie of the British steamship Rollesby reports a submarine volcano eruption about six hundred miles off Cape Verde Island on November 28. A 50 foot circumference water column shot up 150 feet, with heavy vapor and apparent lava or stone. the sea stirred violently within a mile and boiled within a half mile. detonations heard for two hours.
Washington reports on Panama Canal excavation totals of 1,838,486 cubic yards last month, enough to cover ten city blocks at forty feet. Col Goethals’ work is praised as unprecedented, with comparisons to the Pyramid of Cheops and other canals. Health improving, with yellow fever absent over eighteen months and death and sickness rates declining. Medals planned for two years of service, Roosevelt urging official recognition of Isthmus workers.
Five men died when a caisson sank fifty feet under the Seine near Notre Dame, triggering a compressed air explosion that hurled workers into a concrete wall. Others escaped as sections flooded, wrecking pumping gear and hindering a fire engine's efforts to control rising water.
Buffalo on December 23 reports Postmaster Frederick Greiner Republican leader may become state chairman. Rumors say Timothy Woodruff will retire and Greiner is viewed favorably by leaders including Woodruff Wadsworth Parsons and Barnes for the post.
An ambulance driver was injured and a policeman dragged by a runaway horse after a collision with a trolley car on a return trip from a call to Mrs. Charles Smith of East 61st Street. Mrs. Smith died at Presbyterian Hospital. The horse was captured at Fifth Avenue and 65th Street.
Timothy W. Saunders foreman at Hart's Island shoe shop of the Department of Correction was struck by a car owned by Dr. J. H. Frankenberg near Park Avenue. Saunders suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. The chauffeur Emil Mauchcetts fled to the St Regis after the impact and the car was found later at the Blue Ribbon Garage. Detective efforts and social connections tied Saunders to the Mohegan Club.

Toulon December 23 fire in the southern arsenal destroys the naval spirit stores for a fifth time in two years. Firemen and troops fought the blaze though many were injured as several vessels exploded and flames reached up to one hundred feet. The earlier April fire caused about 1 million dollars in damage to five arsenals and key depots including the submarine workshop and torpedo school. An incendiary cause is suspected.
Secretary Taft spent a brief Cincinnati call visiting his mother’s grave at Spring Grove Cemetery and meeting old family friends. He declined to discuss politics. Senator Foraker joined him for a Christmas visit, with supporters saying Foraker’s cause remains strong after a Cleveland reception.
Congressman Theodore E. Burton said he will press for delegates to the Republican State Convention pledged to Taft in Cuyahoga County. He plans to urge friends to seek delegate positions, arguing against electing a Taft opposition candidate seen as obstructive to the Taft bid. Burton supports countywide delegates while Foraker supporters favor ward elections.
