In East Orange New Jersey on December 18 Mrs. Bella Zelliff and her mother Mrs. Josephine Harriman died by gas exposure at 26 Central Avenue and 47 Steuben Street. Investigators doubt suicide with no note and consider accident or murder.
Sharon Pennsylvania writer reports Squire S Gilbert received a request from Albert J Randall of Okanogan County Washington for one thousand stray cats to be picked up and shipped west. Randall promises payment and plans to visit Pennsylvania within a month to collect cats for delivery by April.
Buckingham Palace expects Queen Marys accouchement in March per The Chronicle three months before the coronation date. It would be the first royal birth there in fifty four years, with prior births at York Cottage Sandringham except the Prince of Wales born at White Lodge Richmond Park Surrey.
The Bureau of Statistics reports 27 countries show imports and exports rising about 9 percent on monthly averages versus 1900. Exports are expected to total 14 to 15 billion dollars and imports over 15 billion in 1910, marking a banner year for international commerce.
Henry F. Allen seventy three a former judge of the Court of Claims died after leaping from the tenth floor of the Mutual Life Building tonight. He had suffered nervous prostration for weeks and tied a handkerchief over his eyes before the jump. He leaves two sons Herbert W. and John F. Allen.
Newport Rhode Island reports rain breaks a long drought that had exhausted the city supply. Residents rushed to collect water from tubs and buckets as officials had shut off water in many homes to curb waste and conserve for upcoming needs.
Felix M. Warburg donates 60000 to the Young Men’s Hebrew Association at 92d Street and Lexington Avenue to fit up an addition. A brownstone adjoining the main building will be rebuilt as the Louis A Heinsheimer Memorial Building. The Heinsheimer bequest to Jewish charities was redirected to the New York Foundation and remains non sectarian. The Warburg gift is personal and separate from the Heinsheimer funds.
Telegraph report from Little Rock Arkansas quotes United States Senator Jeff Davis denying rumors he bought a car for travel to Washington and from Russellville to his law office stating he uses his legs and would not know how to operate a vehicle. The item ends with an advertisement for a grapefruit product and Angostura bitters.
In Passaic County a suit seeks $59,000 for the alienation of Lilian Higgins Gaul from Ray Gaul against Bogota mayor and American Paper Company director William N. Smith. Gaul and Smith are named in another divorce action filed in Trenton. The case stems from alleged social ties with the Gauls from 1909 to 1910, including rides to inns and New York hotels, while Gaul was away. Mrs. Smith publicly defends her husband’s conduct, calling rumors outrageous and describing their church-circle friendship with the Gauls.
Telegraph report from Port Limon says a small island in the Tlopango lagoon sank after a series of earthquakes. About seventy five families on the island were said destroyed with around one hundred seventy people perishing as the island vanished by morning. Survivors reached the mainland as boats evacuated others amid continuing tremors and rising seas.
Gregorio Taltone hunted Letorio Penturo for three weeks after Penturo abducted Taltone’s thirteen year old sister. Taltone shot Joseph Vasta and Giuseppe Vasta at Penturo’s home in Saratoga Avenue, then fled before being captured by Deputy Sheriff Wagner in a swamp shack and jailed in White Plains.
Rochester Pennsylvania December 18 a six year old boy was caught in the Monaca post office with arms full of mail taken from two boxes. The child was identified as Martin McCush son of his friend. An investigation will determine losses to the two firms and whether locks were forced or left open. Scraps of letters addressed to the two firms were found in a waste basket.
Pittsburg reports a week of paydays for workers in mills mines and manufactories with an estimated 3 million dollars to be distributed before Christmas. Paymasters divide the totals among iron and steel at 1.25 million coal and coke at 0.8 million and other industries at 0.95 million.
William Krause caretaker at 104 East 112th Street died after a torn blood vessel in his left leg ruptured while bending to tie an untied shoe lace. Dr Langrock of Harlem Hospital ruled the cause as accidental and tied to the loosened lace. John J Murphy of the Bartenders Union found Krause dead in a second floor chair as meetings were being arranged.
The Record-Herald reports an upcoming announcement of engineers plan to build a tunnel from Chicago to New York and other eastern cities. The tunnel would carry telephone and telegraph wires and a pneumatic tube for package freight.
William N. Mann sixty president of Vacuum Oil Company at 290 Broadway lies at death in St Marys Hospital Hoboken after collapsing from apo plexy following an arrest for assault by Edgar Blackledge of Montclair. Mann was a fellow passenger with Blackledge on a New York to Hoboken tube train and reportedly struck Blackledge prompting arrest. Manns wife and brother traveled from Summit to the hospital.
Henry A. Stone, owner of a garage on West 180th Street, lost a $7,400 automobile on Riverside Drive when lighting rear lamps caused gasoline to ignite. The car burned after a match touched the fuel, with fire racing up the vehicle. Three engines and two ladder trucks responded, leaving only twisted metal. Stone said it was insured for $1,000.
Public Safety Director Scott Small says city plans to ask the Board of Health to restrict kissing after consulting physicians. He claims many diseases are spread by kissing and that segregating such people would reduce hospital cases.
Immigration authorities inspect the Greek liner Themistocles from Piraeus for diseased aliens and a Greek officer accused of embezzlement, detained by the captain who cites orders. Twelve inspectors search the vessel while crews are mustered and a guard remains aboard.
Thomas Gaynor of Springfield, brother of New York City Mayor Gaynor, was defeated today for superintendent of the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans Home. J. P.
