No Test As To Hughes Primaries Reveals Little
Friends of Governor Hughes argue upstate primaries show little sentiment against renomination. They note most districts had organization tickets, not Hughes or anti-Hughes lines, with real test coming in delegate conventions. Brooklyn Republican leader Darwin Ed James asserts organization strength controls districts and that primaries largely reflect organized voters, not independents.

Hughes Wins Support in Saratoga County Fair
Governor Hughes spoke at the Saratoga County Fair in Ballston Spa and won over many farmers and townspeople with calls for direct nominations and law and order. He faced a mixed reception from the racing community but found broader support beyond Saratoga Springs, with several local officials and rural residents voicing positive views on his renomination despite anti-Hughes sentiment among professional politicians and horsemen. The turnout was modest, with spectators-turned-listeners gradually engaged as he pressed his points on governance and Saratoga’s future prosperity.

William H. Taft argued against federal deposit guarantees, saying such plans reward reckless banking and raise depositor risk. He contrasted platform limits with a candidate’s influence and noted Roosevelt’s policy prompts. Colonel John McAnerney, a former ally of Cleveland, backs Taft but won’t campaign.
