Fuerst Bismarck Crippled At Sea By Broken Shaft
The British tramp ship Sheppy Allison reported the Hamburg American liner Fuerst Bismarck broken down at sea after its starboard shaft failed. The two vessels met at 9 a.m. on Friday August 22 in position 40.44 N and 66.22 W. all on board are well. The Fuerst Bismarck had sailed from this port last Thursday for Cherbourg Southampton and Hamburg with notable passengers aboard. The ship has a history of engine trouble including prior incidents in 1896 when it damaged a fishing vessel and later navigated to New York on a single engine.

Beggars have been held in Twenty third street between Lexington and Second avenues where people are roughened for alms. William Murray of 245 East Twenty fifth street was attacked by three men. One struck him as another stole his watch and ran. Murray to Bellevue Hospital with four scalp wounds. A suspect, William J. Fitch of 198 Hall Street Brooklyn, was arrested but Murray could not identify him. Fitch jailed on assault charge.
