Scheme to Cool Subway Aids Ventilation and Comfort

Bion J. Arnold proposes a solid centre wall between north and south express tracks from 96th Street to Brooklyn Bridge to improve cooling and piston ventilation. A 4 inch terra cotta wall would cost about $225 per running foot, or $76 overall, with a concrete option costing up to $130,000 but less effective. Vertical sliding doors and observed windows at stations could mitigate restricted passage. the plan aims to triple cool air intake, reduce summer heat, and would be funded by the city through a contract with Interborough. If delayed, large fans at Grand Central and 14th Street stations could be installed to force cooler air into the subway.
