Fleet in Speedy Run Queen Shows the Way

Nineteen yachts, eleven schooners, seven sloops and the Vigilant led a quick eighty two mile run from Vineyard Haven to Provincetown in the New York Yacht Club's Spira squadron. The race featured light southerly winds, shifting tides, and early handicaps for some boats, with the Queen and Elmina among the leaders throughout the twelve mile leg to Cross Rip lightship and the subsequent Cape Cod stretch toward Wood End Light. Commodore Vanderbilt's circle celebrated the fleet's strong showing as the Norther Star and other steam yachts trailed along, while Sir Thomas Lipton's America's Cup challenge loomed in remarks by Nath Herreshoff aboard the Roamer.
