Diplomats from Russia and Japan faced an unwelcome setback as fog halted their Newport arrival on the Mayflower and the Dolphin. The fleet’s Portsmouth reception was postponed, officials fearing further travel disruptions by train as lingering weather stifled progress in the peace negotiations.
A thick fog prevents the peace squadron from reaching Portsmouth as M. Witte and Baron Rosen disembark at Newport. The Mayflower and Dolphin anchor off Brenton Reef Lightship while Russian and Japanese envoys tour the area and plan a special car trip to Boston.
Aug 6 Worried crowds in Wentworth Portsmouth await the senior Russian plenipotentiary M Witte as rumors spread he may arrive by train or on a special transport. Governor McLane and naval officers prepare for a peace conference with heavy fog threatening harbor entry, while reception plans hinge on Witte's arrival aboard the Mellower or by land.
President Roosevelt speaks to about two hundred members of the non sectarian Christian Brotherhood of Oyster Bay in Bowman's church. He reads from the Bible, urges charity over judgment, cites texts from Matthew, Corinthians and James, and stresses doing good through individual and collective effort before greeting leaders Bowman and Wightman and departing for Sagamore Hill.
A deadly clash between Hip Sing and On Leong Tongs erupted in a Chinese theatre on Doyers Street. Police describe the Hip Sings as aggressors, shots fired from rear, two dead and several wounded, amid a citywide dragnet and panicked crowds of whites and Chinese shoppers.
Paul Morton president of the Equitable Life Assurance Society and Mrs Moron narrowly escaped death when their car collided with a southbound vehicle on 24th street near Sixth Avenue. The Morton party had been in New Jersey with guests Mr and Mrs Charles H Keep. The chauffeur swerved to avoid the oncoming car as pavement was slippery in rain. The Mortons and guests escaped unharmed only a scratchy confrontation ensued with the conductor, Walden W Woodson, who refused medical aid. The hired car suffered damage but was quickly repaired on the street.
An electrical storm floods Vineland streets with boats by afternoon. Telephone and fire alarm fail as Peter Haughey’s barn is struck by lightning and burned, 100 chickens displaced. Insurance for the barn expired in May. estimated loss about 1500 dollars.
Willon Kelly and wife swam at Orchard Beach Pelham Bay Park yesterday neither can swim. Mrs Kelly waded far out a young man aided her but Kelly bit the man on the arm with a rock. Patrolman Smith intervened and persuaded the man to leave. Kelly threatened to arrest Smith and shouted for his wife to come ashore under dire threats. The crowd jeered as Mrs Kelly left with her irate husband followed by onlookers.
Trenton August 6 Special reports caretaker C Fitageorge found a large box known as curiosity box destroyed by fire on the lot of Charles Price. The box placed by Mrs Price contained all personal effects of her husband. Police believe valuables were stolen and box burned to conceal the crime.
William F. Kelly a machinist residing on 17th Street fell from bed today in West New York New Jersey Aug 6 ruptured an artery in his left side and died before aid could reach him The family had been at church and found him unconscious on the floor
Havana reports Governor Jose Miguel Gomez of Santa Clara Province, a Liberal candidate for the presidency, defies the Palma administration. He asserts provincial authority to inspect municipalities, warns of resisting Supreme Court mandating, and accuses the island of a volatile powder mine. He claims 4000 rural guards secretly favor him, while Moderates dispute his figures.
Sixteen year old Sis Simpson captains the largest of four naphtha launch boats operating a six mile, ten cent fare service between Ast Udth Street and Classon Point. Police arrest John Winters for operating without a license as detectives arrive. Winters faces a Morrisania court arraignment with a $25 per trip fine alleged for each unlicensed voyage.
James Farraro and Donaldi Andrea, both in their early twenties, were detained at Stagg Street police station after a street confrontation in Williamsburg. A boy was struck by Farraro, who fired at Jacob Mirski but missed. A crowd attacked the store shelter and Andrea wounded Joseph Leberwitz, as officers eventually moved the pair to safety amid continued stones and pursuit.
Aug 6 reports from Lidiapudze state Japan has 490000 infantry and 1800 guns massed before Russian lines in Manchuria. Excludes Hasegawa detachment in Corea and another unnamed unit. Weather is favorable and roads drying. Russian dispatch from Godzyadani notes Japanese who landed at Castries Bay have sailed back. shoreline buildings burned.
John Etheridge, 24, sought by police in Asbury Park and other cities for forgery and defrauding hotel men and clergymen by posing as an Episcopal priest, was identified by Rev. Edgar E. Brooks of Dover as the visitor who preached at St. John's Church and stole a gold watch. He faces possible transport to New Jersey tomorrow after prior imprisonment in England.
In Yokohama on August 6, a Chinese meeting resolved to boycott American bankers, shippers, and insurance agents. Other business plans were postponed, deferring action on additional enterprises.
A reported accident from White Lake Sullivan County said Mrs Joseph Holdsworth wife of a mill owner in this city her daughter Mrs Joe Ela Holdsworth and Mrs William Walter were seriously injured in a runaway crash earlier in the day. They rode with the coachman when horses frightened on a steep stretch and occupants were thrown against a stone wall. Mr Holdsworth secured a physician and trained nurse and traveled to White Lake by auto to reach Jersey City. Special permission was obtained to hold the Erie night express pending the arrival of the automobile.
Salt Lake City reports a new company organized to run aerial cars across the Grand Canyon of the Colorado. The proposed cars would fly at five hundred feet or more, using telegraph lines to coordinate service.
A newspaper item reports ongoing fever illness with quarantined man dead. New cases total 533 and new deaths 8 marked this period. June sees another fatality as the outbreak continues with two new foci and 105 total deaths.
A man from the steamer Advance, arriving from Colon, died in Swinburne Island quarantine hospital of yellow fever. This follows a June death of a Colon returnee at the same site. Eight New Orleans deaths were reported yesterday as prayers for Archbishop Chapelle rise and the federal government steps in to fund the public health fight.
William B. Smith pantryman of the steamer Advance from Colon died of yellow fever amid a cluster of suspected cases. Doctors report 3 genuine cases this year with 2 fatalities, 16 island crew members and 3 passengers detained. Smith’s death follows a prior colon outbreak and a milder Quarantine case. Smith, 45, had long sea service and cheerful demeanor. Cremation planned. deaths noted include Frank O’Leary, secretary to Supreme Court justices, who died after Colón visit.
