A passenger elevator in the seven story Bellevue Hospital caried 30 visitors beyond its 20 passenger limit and fell three stories from the third to the basement. Bertram Anderson, the temporary operator, released the passengers and quit after the incident with no injuries reported.
The New York area reported six drownings yesterday at Echo Lake New Jersey and Rockaway Beach New York. Bud Goodwin of the New York Athletic Club saved three men at Rockaway while others perished including three Pinkney children and several Yonkers men on the Hudson. The day saw multiple rescues as lifeguards and volunteers battled dangerous currents and undertows.
A ship brought a varied trio of wildlife to New York with Thomas William Arthur delivering species from Mrs. Mary Roberts of Hobart. The gift includes Madagascar lemurs and tortoises, vervet monkeys, a North Queensland carpet snake, Tasmanian parrots, New Guinea finches, bronze wing pigeons, and Tasmanian coats. Arthur, Wellington’s head keeper, has a storied career including service aboard Fou droyant’s breakdown after Admiral Nelson’s fleet.
James Dolan of White Plains was struck by a large touring car containing five people on Mamaroneck Road near Gedney Farm and left unconscious in a gutter for hours. He sustained a broken right leg and other injuries and was taken to White Plains Hospital after a trolley conductor found him. Dolan has a history of past injuries from similar incidents.
Charles J. Iver Goeber of 421 East 146th Street was arrested on a warrant for discharging firearms in public. A stray bullet allegedly struck six year old James Adams on July 21 near his home at 419 East 146th Street. Doctor Goeller, owner of a shooting gallery in his yard, was released on bail as the case proceeded.
A Delaware and Hudson passenger train with about two to three dozen people derailed north of the city at dusk. Fireman Frederick Schermerhorn is believed fatally injured while others including George Jump of Schenectady and Jon Stive of New York City sustained serious injuries. Wreckers removed the four coaches and baggage car from the tracks.
President Taft approves Attorney General Wickersham's legal and ethical ruling that no law bars placing Robert E. Lee in Statuary Hall in Confederate dress. The opinion cites Lee as symbol of historical renown and Virginia’s right to designate figures for national commemoration. A separate note reports Frank C. Wiley’s morphine recovery ended in suicide at Bellevue Hospital.
Clarence R. Halter of New York was bitten on the hand by a rattlesnake in Stratford Connecticut while attempting to take a snake from a box at a local druggist. After first aid he was transported to a New York hospital for treatment. The incident occurred during his visit to buy snakes.
Veronica Yeonak clung to a second story window sill at 18 West 25th Street Bayonne New Jersey to avoid arrest by Patrolmen Lee and Cos. After about twenty minutes they rescued her she was exhausted and charged with grand larceny.
Three boys planned a raid on a Chinese laundry at 1744 Park Avenue last night and emptied the till. Irani Cohen, 61 East 98th Street, jailed for burglary. William McGibney, 1228 Park Avenue, and Andrew McCarthy, 1712 Third Avenue, sent to the Children's Society for juvenile delinquency.

Annie Westenburg two years old was crossing No 1184 Fox street in The Bronx when a car driven by William Wendelken ran over her frock snagging in the gear. The car was stopped half a block later after witnesses feared the worst. A laceration to the baby's right hand was the sole injury.

The Honduras revolution saw a second battle at Peru near Ceiba with about 25 killed and 100 wounded on both sides. Monday’s clash near Ceiba left around 100 dead and 200 wounded. General Lee Christmas leads the Bonilla army wing, as Manuel Sonilla reportedly lands with a large force along the coast.

Stuttgart July 31 The Socialists won another victory in the by election for the Reichstag seat in Ludwigsburg Cannstatt districts. Wiel led with 18 705 votes while von Oettinger 9 528 and Wolf 4 990. The seat had been held by a National Liberal.
A Brooklyn woman called at the Marriage License Bureau, changed her mind about a license, and wed John J Hart within an hour. She had been engaged to Charles Searls, explained she loved Hart for three years, and Hart’s friend helped arrange the quick ceremony.

In Antioch California yesterday four children aged one to four were drowned in a tub by their mother Mrs Joseph Mello who calmly surrendered after the act. Authorities said she had become suddenly demented. The tragedy left the oldest child four years old.
Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen and Ethel Clare Leneve were taken from the Canadian Pacific liner Montrose at Quebec early today after the ship arrived from Antwerp. Guards escorted the prisoners to jail while Crippen showed no confession and police noted jewels found on him as the only incriminating evidence.
