The Creed of a Layman and Harrison's Positivist Faith

A critical review of Frederic Harrison work and its layman creed. It traces his embrace of Positivism as Christian science blended with philosophy, notes his view on empire and reform, and contrasts his thought with Comte and Kant while praising his public spirit and patriotism.

Prophetic chronogram on France and John Bull debated

The passage analyzes a chronogram linking France to cocks and a Maid of Orleans with John Bull as a bull. It questions whether Taurus marks a month or a person and notes Mars moving into Taurus in March April. The author doubts authentic John Bull references and says the prophecy merely restates known events without predicting French success.

Charles the Bold, last Duke of Burgundy 1433 1477

A critical survey of Burgundy in the fifteenth century focusing on Charles the Bold. It compares Burgundian aims and failures with the Hohenzollerns, notes battles Grandson Morat and the Feast of the Pheasant, and assesses Miss Putnam's biography as a careful though occasionally opaque history with strong illustrations.

When Is A Noise Not A Noise Captain Seeks Ruling

Police Commissioner Bingham issued an anti noise order ten days ago saying common sense distinguishes unnecessary noise. Captain Carson received many complaints about park goers in Morningside Park and bells at the Convent of the Sacred Heart and St Hegis House being called noisy. Plainclothes officers found the bells soothing and not noisy, prompting the captain to seek a formal ruling on what constitutes permissible sound.
