Washington July 31 The Secretary of Agriculture reports a hopeful crop outlook with corn and wheat improving relative to recent years. Cotton hay and other crops are described as good with no firm price predictions, while officials emphasize reliance on official reports and forecasts. Chief Statistician Hyde notes July 1 conditions show strong wheat and corn but timing of future data remains uncertain.
San Francisco reports California wheat yields will be smaller this season due to late rains and dry winds. Estimates range around 20,000 bushels, with 14,900,000 cited by some traders. Last year yielded 15,000,000. Central and Northern regions faring better than the South. Prices steady with milling wheat at 155 a cental and shipping at 140. The City of New York gains a new cultural institution with the founding deed recorded for the Hispanic Society of America. A woman driving a Victoria went to Bellevue Hospital last night to see the abandoned baby on the Whitney mansion stoop at 871 Fifth Ave. She refused to name herself but said she lives at Hotel Endicott. James E. Cutter, former valet to Dr. Henry G. Spooner of 25 West Forty-fourth Street, resisted three detectives at the Bartholdi Hotel on Broadway and Twenty-third Street after Bohrman was shot. He dropped a pistol, tried to draw another, but was overpowered and arrested. a second revolver was found on him. Cutter had attacked a janitor July 21 and fled after writing to Spooner for a personal notice. He is charged with felonious assault and has a prior Boston conviction for threatening to shoot his brother-in-law.
Excited crowds of Italians gathered as smoke poured from the one story church at No 22nd Street in Brooklyn. They battered doors to save sacred images and vessels before police and fire reserves intervened, driving back those inside and containing the scene.
