The Sound steamer Rosedale of the Bridgeport Line sprang a port side leak off Fort Schuyler while sailing from Pier 31 to Bridgeport. It returned to City Island where about one hundred passengers, including women shoppers, disembarked and sought trains or shelter as a gale and rain lashed the harbor.

The War Office dispatch from Lord Kitchener dated April 15 describes Colonel Sir Henry Rawlinson’s column rushing the south laager northwest of Klerksdorp at daylight. Six Boers killed, ten wounded, twenty three captured. one 12 pounder, one pompom, two ammunition wagons seized. three British wounded. Colonel Plumer took a field cornet and seven men with ten wagons and eighteen rifles. Seven Boers killed in Colonel Pilcher’s Orange River Colony operations. A private telegram reported General French captured, but the War Office denied it.
