Carnegie led a civic parade to dedicate the enlarged Carnegie Institute in Pittsburg with 25 000 spectators. The Thaw jury did not reach a verdict after about thirty hours of deliberation. Justice FitzGerald extended their time until 11 30 then ordered them locked up. A fire in the Anheuser-Busch Restaurant adjoining the Newark Theatre near Market and Beaver streets caused a theater panic. Patrons on the first and second floors fled hatlessly to Market Street as Miss Jessie Busley performed In the Bishop's Carriage. While staff aided exits, smoke drifted over the stage and several women fainted in the lower balcony and orchestra. The blaze is believed to have begun in the adjacent restaurant.
Surgeons at St. Gregory's Hospital replaced a necrotic bone fragment in six year old Peter Lepari of Brooklyn with bone wax to stimulate new bone growth. The operation, aided by experts from Flower Hospital, marked one of the first such procedures in the country. X rays will monitor healing as the wax gradually absorbs and bone tissue forms.
Senator Foraker arrived in Columbus from Canton and met with Governor Harris and state leaders at the State House. He declared no compromise in the county contest and dismissed Nick Longworth’s remarks, pledging strong, unfaltering support. Lieutenant Colonel Glenn, who defended Major Penrose, also met him.
Ann Arbor Michigan April 11 Ohio students at the University of Michigan organized a club to back Secretary Taft for President. The group opens with about one hundred members.
Two men were assaulted and robbed near the Criminal Courts Building as thousands gathered for the Thaw verdict. Louis Stein, cloakmaker, and John Jackson, travelling salesman, were injured and robbed of cash, watches, and jewelry. Both went to Hudson Street Hospital for treatment.
A disorderly crowd at the Polo Grounds surged onto the field during a New York versus Philadelphia game. Cushions and snowballs flew as players vanished from view and four policemen restored order. Two youths were jailed for disorderly conduct as authorities plan police protection for the next game.
Albany April 11 James S Whipple State Forest Fish and Game Commissioner announced denial of ex Lieutenant Governor Timothy L Woodruff's bid to open a highway across state land to access his property near Racquette Lake Kamp Kill Kare area A first application was denied for public necessity since alternate access exists The second sought a five acre in every hundred reservation but the commissioner questions the statute's intent legality and non use The order will likely be reviewed by the courts.
Mrs. Sarah C. Anderson aged fifty six died suddenly at the Hotel Gotham No 4 East 28th street while visiting her daughter Mrs J P Case. The death occurred after a day of walking and a dream reported by her daughter. Dr Russell said heart disease caused the death.
