Maseru Basutoland April 5 The reoccupation of Ladybrand Thaba Nchu and Bloemfontein waterworks by the Boers in full view of Basutos shocks local sentiment. Natives claim British reverses and fear evacuations at Wepener could bring disaster, while hope rises for General Brabant to press advance.
Twenty one Boers escaped from the old camp at Simonstown on Saturday April 7. Nine have been recaptured. They cut a fence under a sentry bridge while the guard was above. A sanitary cart driver offered £200 to help them flee. A new tunnel was found opposite the prior breach, nearly complete to the breaching point.
April 6 report from Boshof notes many French prisoners captured by British. Captains Boyle and Williams of Yeomanry and General de Villebois-Mareuil buried with military honors. Bloemfontein correspondent recounts Villebois-Mareuil as brave, intelligent, a French sous-officer renowned writer. Cronje rebukes him during the flank warning.
Bethany reports General Gatacre’s force returning without locating the missing British column captured by the Reddersburg commando. Losses are not estimable but likely large due to stubborn fighting as five British infantry companies were taken by surprise during a march.
Frederick Deive and his son pursue two men robbing a pigeon cote at 493 Liberty Ave. George Eck is shot and mortally wounded. the surviving thief escapes with 14 birds. Deive and Eck are involved, Eck dies later, Deive held on first degree assault charge with $2,500 bail.
A large Havana crowd marched from the Prado to Gomez’s residence to urge the general to stay in Cuba as the Autonomists reemerge in politics. Gas ton Mora spoke for the National party praising Gomez for opposing Autonomists and supporting the US treaty framework. Gomez said he must briefly be away for private matters but will return, and urged Autonomists to refrain from political mixing. The National party’s Executive Committee circulated a leaflet pleading Gomez not to abandon Cuba, stressing his unique role since Monte Cristi.
At 3 PM a strong west wind of sixty miles per hour drove an oyster sloop to Pier 33 North River. After waiting then venturing out the sloop sprang a leak and sank about 500 feet offshore. The two men escaped ashore in a skiff and vanished before police could identify them. Bricks from the high wind fell near Officer Grace as he patrolled No 16 Wall Street area.
Berlin April 8 The biweekly Oriental Express from Berlin to Constantinople will begin service on April 30, covering the distance in fifty one hours. From twenty hotels to Grand Central Station, trains depart nearly every hour for Buffalo Chicago St Louis or Cincinnati. New York lighted trains illuminated by piano.
Governor Roosevelt meets with Senator Platt and B. B. Odell Jr at the Fifth Avenue Hotel. He says he does not seek the vice presidency but desires renomination and reelection as governor. Dr Robert Cunnion of No 50t Jay Street Brooklyn died suddenly Saturday in Gustave Prozesky s saloon at 202 Graham Avenue Brooklyn. Initial report suggested suicide but later said heart disease. Born January 22 1870 in Brooklyn he graduated from College of Physicians and Surgeons 19 1 and built a large practice. He served as medical examiner for the Letter Carriers Association and Brooklyn School Board. He is survived by his wife.
In Central Park yesterday multiple runaway horses caused chaos on East and West Drives. John Krite, at 511 East Eightieth Street, was thrown when his horse bolted twice, the second time toward a Fifth Avenue stage. Mrs. M. Taylor, 248 West Fifty Fifth Street, and two New York Athletic Club members escaped unharmed after a cab ride. A third runaway near Eighty-sixth Street injured mounted officer Corbett's knee slightly, while Thomas Wallace of the Rossmore Hotel fell, spraining his right leg. Bicycle rider Mrs. G. T. Mati, 24 East Fifty Fifth Street, dislocated her right ankle after a tire burst.
In Machias Maine two loggers died after drinking Jamaica ginger and a crew fell ill from the same cause. A coroner's jury linked the deaths to Jamaica ginger. Bowdoin College professor analyzed viscera showing high capsicum content and stomach membranes softened by the toxin.
Rosa Grossman forty? four? ends her life by cutting her throat with a razor in a tenement at 78 Stanton Street. Aged thirty four, she left a note of ill health. her husband and five children aged four to eighteen slept nearby as the lodger and others heard only groans until the father found her dead. The newly bought razor came from son Jacob who teased she should keep it safe.

Capt Sturgis' recon team killed two and captured ten on the Novaliches Road. a 42d Infantry detachment sheltered in a Paete church under attack.
