Allied forces report capturing 1,300 prisoners and four towns near St Quentin. In the Balkans, Bulgars lose Prilep while Turks Haifa and a crew are noted in the broader theater. McAdoo opens the Fourth Liberty loan drive in New York, seeking $6 billion with exemptions for substantial holders.
Gov. Walter E. Edge of New Jersey led a Republican sweep in yesterday’s primary, defeating Edward Gray and George Record by about ten to one. George LaMonte won the Democratic long-term U.S. Senate nomination, with no opposition for the short term. Voting was light and scattered, with local results showing Edge strong in his Atlantic City home county.
Geneva reports the American Red Cross lists 260 American prisoners held among other races in Stuttgart Karlsruhe and Metz. The dispatch notes Stuttgart and Karlsruhe have been repeatedly bombed from the air by Allied forces.
British forces report the Turkish Seventh and Eighth Armies wiped out near the Jordan. Haifa Acre and Es Salt captured as 260 guns and vast amounts of ammunition are found in depots spanning acres. Cavalry advances and aerial bombardment crush retreating columns, with many Turks surrendering under white flags.
Two British airmen in a single aircraft forced surrender of sixty five Germans after an aerial engagement. They guided the prisoners across No Man's Land to British lines, returning to patrol once the event was over.
German Chancellor von Hertling addressed the Reichstag Main Committee saying public discontent in Germany stems from four years of war, not the military situation. He defended German resolve, praised leaders Hindenburg and Ludendorf, and warned against timidity as Verdun and Somme setbacks were reviewed.
On September 24 Allied forces push twenty miles along the Macedonian front as First and Second Bulgarian Armies retreat in disorder. French and Serbian troops seize Prilep and Drenska Massif while British forces take Doiran, with Italian gains on Monastir front and further captures of trains and guns. Deserters reported among Bulgarian troops and executions of 660 men per German officers.
From The Hague report dated Sept 24 German leaders plan a renewed retreat as French English and American forces prepare further blows on multiple fronts. Draft dodgers are interned near Hanover, and German press predicts escalation in battles along the west front with renewed American and French cooperation.
Paris reports allied victory hastening German collapse across the eastern front. Austria seeks peace while Bulgaria and Turkey suffer routs and loss of provinces. Liman von Sanders and Enver Pasha blamed as German influence wanes in Constantinople and Uskub, foreshadowing harsher fate for Germany on the western front.
London reports British and French forces advancing on fronts northwest west and south of St Quentin with good progress along the line. Haig says about 800 prisoners were taken and German resistance remained strong near Selency while British and French forces link up near Franchiy Selency and Epinede.
British and French forces repulsed multiple German assaults along the front north and south of St. Quentin. In one engagement near the Quadrilateral, about 200 Germans were captured and twenty machine guns were taken, with a hundred enemy dead counted inside British lines. Further fighting occurred near Epehy and Villers-Guislain as shelling and trench actions continued.
French official Balkan front report says pursuit across Monastir to Veles continues. Allied cavalry harasses retreating enemy toward Veles Istip and Sigu mitza while Franco-Serbian troops thrust beyond Prilep Gradsko road and forge a bridgehead north of the Vardar.
