Explosion on Olympia Kills Two as Sailors Loot Alcohol
A barrel of fifty six gallons of rain alcohol exploded on the cruiser Olympia in dry dock at Norfolk Navy Yard. Two men, Corp. Yerkes and a sailor, died. several others were severely injured. The blaze was confined to the deck and extinguished by Navy Yard Fire Department and marines. The theft and handling of the barrel are under investigation with the shipkeeper and master at arms missing or unaccounted.
