Wright Ship Up Over 70 Minutes

Orville Wright set a new world aeroplane flight record at Fort Myer by flying one hour ten minutes and twenty four seconds, surpassing his prior mark by four minutes thirty two seconds. He demonstrated precise control with spirals figure eights and rapid turns, concluding as dusk approached. He maintained 39.55 mph during the stretch, nearly meeting the government 40 mph requirement, and declined taking a passenger despite many requests from Signal Corps officers. Speaking with Major Fournier and Octave Chanute, Wright downplayed history but emphasized speed, while a later flight tested the motor during a ten minute run before a longer 5:28 PM ascent to 200 feet. He repelled a potential obstacle on landing and finished the day with continued aerial testing.
