Special to The New York Times reports on board the Lusitania off Crookhaven. The Lusitania overtook the Lucania Sunday night and by noon Monday held a fifty mile lead. The ship maintained nearly 26 knots with slight tremor, despite fog. The day’s noon run was 561 knots as weather improved.
Wireless report from the Lusitania places her at latitude 51 07 N longitude 23 03 W with an expected New York arrival Friday morning around 7.00. If she maintains 25 knots she would beat the Lucania by about three to four hours, based on 376 miles in fifteen hours. The Haverford, from Philadelphia, also notes Lusitania and Lucania sightings, confirming the timing gap in favor of the Lusitania.
The Lusitania reports 561 knots from Daunt Rock to noon Monday, averaging 25.1 knots after fog lifted. If she reaches Sandy Hook by Friday 7 a.m. she could surpass Cunard and Deutschland records, with officials confident of a record-smashing voyage despite fog delays.
The turbine steamer Harvard of the Metropolitan Steamship Company arrived from New York in 14 hours 52 minutes, a record run along this coast. It reached 22.25 knots in deep water despite minor delays from barges at Hell Gate fog and tides on Vineyard Sound. The Harvard and Yale will alternate origin sailings from Boston and New York, with outside service to begin September 18.
Washington, Sept. 10. Under an order from the War Department today Second Lieutenant Phil H. Sheridan, former military aide to the President, is directed to join Troop D, Fifth Cavalry, at Fort Huachuca, New Mexico, ending his White House post after two years of service.
A letter from Senator Penrose reports his brother Dr. Charles P. Penrose wounded in a bear attack while skinning a deer. The yearling silvertip was killed after the mother charged at about 100 feet. The doctor fainted near a creek and was treated at camp.
A pistol duel between two Italian men on East Fortieth Street near First Avenue drew hundreds of onlookers. Shots struck three-year-old Katie Madden and ten-year-old Mamie Madden, and six-year-old Edna Ogildie, as bystanders fled the chaotic scene. Police arrived too late to stop the combat. the injured children remain in serious condition.
Chicago reports Cornelius McAuliffe of the Chicago Record-Herald says Walter Wellman has not abandoned his polar airship voyage this month. He expects news on whether Wellman sailed around Sept. 6 from Fromsee, Norway, via a tramp steamer, and notes the newspaper has no plan until a definite sailing decision is known. If unsuccessful, future attempts next year are uncertain.
Near Newton Iowa Sept 10 a bull at Struble farm charged Annie Struble as she drove cows to the barn. He knocked her down and gored her left leg opening a bad gash before two men with fence rails beat the animal off.
In Warkhen Ohio George Hayes and his wife near Bazelle drank from a bottle labeled pure rye whisky sent by mail. They near death as investigators probe suspected strychnine contamination and possible enemy involvement. The bottle was placed in a rural mailbox and bears a disguised address. The remaining contents will be analyzed.
Primary day in Metuchen, New Jersey, ends with Dr. Charles M. Freeman, son of the late Judge Manning Freeman and husband of novelist Mary E. Wilkins, under arrest for taking part in a craps game with James A. Duane and two Black men, George Hopkins and John Smith. Warranted and jailed on $1,000 bail, Freeman faces grand jury action after witnesses link him to the game at the Brunswick Hotel.
Mrs Louise Winan of 285 Fifth Avenue awoke to a burgling intruder and, armed with a light chair, struck him across the head and face until he fled. She reported the assault to police with a description of a 0 year old negro with a small black mustache. The burglar took a small handbag containing corn and papers.
York oyster dealer George W. Sterling filed trespass action alleging improper medical treatment caused his wife’s death years ago. The suit seeks damages, with Sterling asserting a wrongful death claim tied to a physician’s alleged misconduct.

D Willis James III of Phelps Dodge & Co. was stricken with heart disease at the Mt. Washington Hotel near Fabyan's in the White Mountains. He improved tonight, with Dr. Stephen D. White staying at his bedside. James holds numerous directorships and memberships, including Golden Hill Corp, Southwestern Investment Co, United States Trust Co, Copper Queen Consolidated, and several arts and cultural organizations. Preparations for his return to New York are under way as he recovers.
Jerome Lillibridge's last will, probated with a $500000 estate, was set aside by Judge Sands. Two sisters of the deceased filed competing claims that he was of unsound mind and unduly influenced. Evidence showed his wife guided his hand to sign the document while he was bedridden.
Ishpeming Michigan September 10 two young brothers Hugh four and Samuel two die after likely banana poisoning from a Greenland Road farm. A sister remains seriously ill and August Schaffer Sr. recovers from a severe sickness linked to the same cause. The four family members were the sole fruit tasters.
Dels Degas a Dane who was ten years a patient at the New Jersey State Hospital for the Insane in Trenton fled early today with Charles Collins an insane convict from the State Prison. Degas, famed for inventive skill, reportedly fashioned a spoon-handle key to unlock doors and gain freedom. No trace of the pair has been found.
New Haven on September 10 reported Mrs. James Wicksell learned her daughter Eleanore, kidnapped as a baby by her father Gustav Wicksell, is alive in Chicago. Searches had continued in Spencer Massachusetts and Rochester New York. Chicago police confirmed the find last night.
Henrietta Crosman was struck on the forehead by Ty rone Powers during a rehearsal of The Christian Pilgrim at the Hudson Theatre. Dr. G. Trump attended the wound, pronounced it not serious, and Crosman returned home to 109th Street and Riverside Drive. She may miss at least two days of rehearsals.

Baltimore, Sept 10. Dr Isaac E Emerson and his wife are sued for 100000 by their son in law T Mitchell Horner claiming she was lured away. Horner, once Atlanta Southern agent for Emerson Drug Co, says he did nothing to cause the separation and that his wife planned to return after a European trip with her father. Mrs Emerson states the suit was a surprise and that Horner knew she would leave.
Professor M H Saville of Columbia reports discoveries along the Pacific coast from fifty miles north to south of the equator and up to 100 miles inland. He describes ruins with durable palm huts, cooking utensils of pottery and wood, and a city that once housed over 3,000 people five centuries ago, suggesting a highly civilized pre Columbian race.

The New York Central Railroad tests dispatching trains by telephone between Albany and Fonda. railroad men disagree on full adoption yet believe it will work satisfactorily in many cases and serve as a backup if other means fail. The telephone was already used by the dispatchers after a severe Albany & Hudson third rail accident two years ago.
Pittsburg is notified that 22 institutions and individuals share $140000 from the late Mrs. Jane Hogg Gardner who died July 18 in Colorado Springs. Each institution gets $5000, each named person $1000, with no clear link to the benefactor in town.
John and Harry Duffy, young brothers, awoke to find two masked burglars in their East Trenton home. One robber leveled a revolver and ordered silence, but John urged time to scream. They promised quiet for three minutes then would yell, startling the intruders who fled before witnesses could trace them.
