Woman Spy Stirs Sham Battle at Van Cortlandt Park
A staged clash by the National Guard's First Battalion of Artillery at Van Cortlandt Park drew about 40,000 spectators. Major David Wilson’s officers staged an Army of the South versus Army of the North engaging in a mock retreat through the park. A lone woman spy rode off unseen after being spotted by Mrs. John Allen, wife of a second battery trumpeter, as guardsmen exchanged gunfire and decoy moves.
