At Rochester on Thursday afternoon the Canal Convention heard speeches by Samuel B. Hunt and others on the Erie Canal, railroads, and proposed reforms. Delegates argued about irregular proceedings, railroad influence, and the push to protect state canals from private monopolies amid calls for broader public action and canal expansion.
Afternoon session notes a letter from Mr Sauvst B Ravais opposing the sale of the Canals. Arguments include preservation of cheap transport, minimal taxpayer burden, and state ownership ensuring affordable transit. The letter cautions private control risks to commerce, public virtue, and republican principles, citing English and French canal examples.
James J. Bautoy of Buffalo lashes the Central Railroad for opaque reports and alleged mismanagement. He urges state legislation to hold directors liable and cites Albany corruption as a warning. The Brooklyn Intelligencer notes plans for laying the cornerstone of a new Roman Catholic church named St Peter's at Hicks and Warren streets. The L-shaped plot seats 1,400 with brick Romanesque design, 202 main pews plus 300 gallery seats, a 170-foot tower, and a linked parsonage. total cost around 60,000 dollars. The society also plans an adjacent Hicks Street academy at about 20,000 pounds. Reverend Lovagin will preside at tomorrow's dedication with other city clergy.
News by Telegraph reports Ex President Pierce returning to his New Hampshire home amid lively displays of friendship. One hundred Amoskesg Veterans led the welcome in Nashua with Mayor Hazemcrow and dignitaries, then escorting him to Concord where crowds cheered and cannons fired.
Beeteux report notes a stabbing aboard the Protector, Capt Croxms injured but recovering, and a trial ordered for the black culprit. Machinists on the Michigan Southern Railroad at Laporte and Adrian struck yesterday over back wages. Only a mall-car and engine are allowed to run. Passengers from the city returned home last evening as no Bilchigan Southern trains have departed since yesterday morning. In Pennsylvania, about two thousand coal miners near Pittsburgh held a procession today demanding wage payment by weight rather than measurement.
A rumor states that two men and a woman fell over Horseshoe Fall during a gale yesterday afternoon. A boat named Kate was seen going over and pieces have been recovered. The boat is believed to belong to Navy Inland. Names of the parties are unknown.
Pruith Rero, postmaster at Poolesville Maryland, was arrested on charges of opening and embezzling letters from the mail. He appeared before Commissioner Manan and was held in five thousand dollars bond to answer the charge.
Joan La Mousta N rose from Bara tega at 6 50 P M yesterday and landed on Mr Wity s farm in Satton s River at 6 P M after traveling nearly one hundred miles.
In Kentucky two men, W. W. Weron and Capt James Jackson, former congressional candidate, were involved in a shooting during a dispute at Hopkinsville. Weron was killed and Jackson was wounded, with reports noting an immediate fatality.
The report notes a none arrival in Fountuxs Port on a clear September evening with a light west wind. The steamship Neai Arilon, due from Liverpool with the 24th ult date, has not yet appeared.

The United States Mail steamship Cahawba commanded by J. W. Situ arrived last evening at 7 o clock after leaving New Orleans on the 27th. It discharged mails passengers and cargo at Havana and took on board mails and passengers for New York. The voyage from Havana four days and one hour from New Orleans six days eleven hours, the shortest ever from New Orleans to New York. The Havana money market remained stringent with new permits allowing Bali imports and Texas beef duty free for a month. Sugar market dull with stock 246000 boxes. Freights light. some improvement in rates. Exchange London 60 days sight 12 to 15 percent premium, New York premium, New Orleans 5 to 6 percent premium. Havana health improving. Cahawba carries 160000 Mexican dollars from New Orleans. A new tower and chapel have been erected at the Cemetery of the Evergreens replacing a destroyed one, with a bell of 2000 renedee weight.
