Lenin, Bolshevist Premier, was shot by two women during a labor meeting in Moscow and reportedly died from wounds. Official telegrams note his deteriorating condition with bulletins stating pulse 112 and normal temperature, while bleeding in the pleura is not increasing.
Special Cable from Stockholm Sept 1 reports an assassination attempt on Nikolai Lenine. A bullet damaged his left lung, internal hemorrhage feared, but he remains conscious and weak. Reports say Lenine is heavily guarded and that Trotzky and Kerensky were not protected by personal guards.
A New York Times dispatch from Peking reports indications of a coup d etat over the Chinese presidency. Northern generals urge a compromise with the South and delaying the presidential election. Canton withdraws troops to Fukien, signaling possible northern southern agreement. President Feng Kuo-chang reportedly seeks postponement to pursue a settlement.
Madrid reports the Spanish government has seized all German steamers interned in Spanish ports following the sinking of the Ataz Mendi by a German submarine. Foreign Minister Dato announced the coal laden vessel from England was torpedoed and sunk. the crew was saved.
Spanish actions against German shipping in its harbors escalate amid a growing anti German sentiment. The Dato cabinet pressed Germany with notes demanding satisfaction after Berlin’s submarine campaign sank Spanish merchant vessels and caused sailor casualties. Berlin warned against breaking ties, while Madrid prepared possible retaliations and ships interned in Spanish ports.
President Wilson calls organized labor and the nation to renew commitment to winning the war against Germany. He frames the conflict as a fight for emancipation and universal rights, urging workers to view industry as a weapon and labor as an essential army at home.

American troops fought on Belgian soil for the first time and captured Voormezeele. They were engaged in operations in the same locality with reports of taking several strong positions between Voormezeele and Ypres.
Australian forces broke through near Mont St. Quentin and captured Peronne after a bold push from Aug. 26 to Sept. 1. Engineers cleared mine traps at river crossings while troops sealed trenches and took many prisoners. Gallantry cited by a corporal and rapid advances reduced German resistance along the Drouscart-Quéant line.
Australian forces with London troops seized two suburbs of Péronne and captured Boucha vesnes and Rancourt, driving German retreat along the Lys line. In August the Allies reported 57,318 German prisoners, 657 guns, thousands of machine guns and mortars, with vast war materiel seized.
British forces pressed along a wide front from Voormezeele to south of Péronne with advances on both flanks and at the Procourt line. In the Bullecourt sector the battle was bitter with only slight territorial change, while the right wing fought through honeycomb defenses at Longatte and recaptured a midline redoubt. Small tanks and mopping-up parties cleared machine gun burrows, yet German losses and German reserves were notably limited.
London Sept. 1 French troops under General Mangin reported successes north and south of the Ailette as they occupied Leary and moved toward Ailette positions in ongoing operations.
