In Cherry Illinois 450 bodies found in the St. Paul Mine after a fire threatened the shaft. Rescue teams found victims on the lowest level 500 feet from the main shaft amid water and black damp. Officials fear a prolonged sealing of the mine if the fire cannot be controlled.
Herbert Parsons recounts asking Theodore Roosevelt to run for mayor of New York this fall before his African trip. Roosevelt declined stating his goal to remain a private citizen after seven years in the White House. Parsons says he did not ask about a governor or senate bid and Roosevelt had no intent to pursue the U.S. Senate nomination to succeed Senator Depew.
The commission heard A. H. Gill M P J R Clynes and Samuel Gompers discuss The Employers Liability Act of Great Britain. Gill praised weekly payments with a lump sum option, while Clynes noted lower litigation and a typical £2,000 death award in common law. Gompers favored the act but rejected mutual accident funds and urged criminal liability for employer negligence.
Indicted former Ameri can Sugar Refining Company workers must stand trial next Monday for alleged involvement in customs frauds for which the Sugar Trust already paid 2 million to the Government. Judge Hough denied a motion to quash against James F. Bendernagel and dismissed Oliver Spitzer's demurrer. Spitzer was foreman at Have meyer & Elder dock in Williamsburg.
Borough President John F. Murray led a ceremony opening the $1,049,609 Grand Boulevard and Concourse. Cyrus C. Miller and Louis F. Haffen spoke of the project begun in 1890 and linking Bronx park systems from 161st Street to Mosholu Parkway. The 182 foot wide, 4.5 mile thoroughfare was toured by officials in cars despite cold weather.
Mrs Ben Teal wife of the stage manager is ordered a new trial by the Court of Appeals in Albany but cannot attend due to illness. Bail set at $1000 and discharge certificate given to her counsel Maurice B Blumenthal. She left the penitentiary with a doctor and moved to a Ninety-fifth Street apartment. She has suffered nervous prostration since her March conviction for subornation of perjury. The charge involved urging Mabel Mac Causlan to falsely claim Frank Gould was in actress Bessie Devoe's apartment.
Albany dispatch corrected The Times report on the Mrs Ben Teal divorce case noting Bessie Devoe was not named co respondent in the suit. The court of appeals reversed a lower court verdict that Mrs Teal was sentenced to one year for subornation of perjury in the case.
Mme. Rosianna Abreu, a Cuban woman who arrived from France with two monkeys and other animals, is sued by Jean and Mrs Huss for 2300 dollars. The Husses allege monkey bites and that they were hired in Paris to accompany Abreu to Havana. Abreu posted bond after failing to appear in court.
In a Supreme Court trial over Anti Monopol y law violation the defense argued Maine ice fields fell to unprofitability and were not closed to world markets. Bangor ice dealer Isaiah Stetson linked artificial ice growth in the South to the Maine decline. Captain Gage testified about two hired boats used on the Hudson in 1910 to destroy independent harvests, noting the larger boat was wood and oldest of its kind in active service.
A new three year night program at Teachers College trains young men with technical ability to become teachers of industrial arts. The diploma in three years covers mathematics drafting design woodworking machine shop work and industrial chemistry. Mechanics lacking teaching credentials may qualify by completing the course.
A 1000 name petition will be presented to Columbia Trustees at the December meeting to appoint Prof J Howard Van Amringe as Dean Emeritus upon his June retirement after fifty years of service. The parchment rolls will bear the signatures and be attached to a resolution to be framed for Earl Hall trophy room as a token of esteem.
The Times report overstated an alimony grant to Mrs. Margaret Archer of 169th Street and Jerome Avenue. Justice McCall dismissed the motion for alimony for insufficient notice and struck irrelevant parts of her complaint in the separation suit against George Archer.
A reader recounts dentist horror stories of sawed teeth and poor bridges, praising the Martinolar Method as a restorative cure. Dr J F Jones of Hammond Indiana endorses the method after a painful history with other dentists. The letter urges a free examination and offers a 40 page illustrated booklet for toothless people.
