Melvin W. Sheppard wins two world marks in 660 and 700 yard races at Celtic Park, plus an American record in the running hop and jump. Dan Ahearn also sets an American mark in the running hop and jump, with Dartmouth and Irish American A C athletes prominent in events.
The Brooklyn Athletic Club held its annual games at Washington Park Maspeth Long Island in wet conditions. R Springsteen Yonkers Y M C A won the three mile handicap race by about twelve yards with H Biddle Mohawk A C in second and F Joyce Mohawk A C third. Rival A C won the 880 yard relay as the Yonkers and Mohawks contested the meet for team honors.
The Maryland United Hunts meeting closed in Baltimore on May 30 highlighted by seven races and an Army officers’ mounted extra. Colored Lady won the final added event ridden by Lieut. Graham of the Tenth Cavalry. Jockey Walsh fell on French Girl and Jockey Moss tumbled on Bergeso.
The sixth annual Watchung Hunt Club meeting in Plainfield featured a dead heat in the Farmers' Race. The event drew about 1,000 society spectators as horses and riders competed for the Netherwood cup and Somerset cup, with notable results across multiple races led by owners such as David Dows Harmon Lass and Ardenia.
Belmont Park witnessed one of the day's best crowds as James R. Keene's Sweep won the Belmont Stakes by a wide margin over the narrow field, with the event adding to a day filled by multiple races and a dramatic rainfall shower. Rossfenton won the Grand National Steeplechase, Sempronus captured the National Stallion, and Booger Red dazzled in a pony race adding to the Memorial Holiday program.
Three thousand spectators attended the Park Way Driving Club meet in Brooklyn to witness the trotting season opener. Winant B. Wardell won the last race driving King Edward, beating Airthorne owned by Charles Seaman after a near dead heat. Borelli driven by Peter B. Dunn won the free for all pacing in straight heats with cups awarded as prizes in multiple races.
In Plainfield on May 30 a 25 mile road race attracted twelve thousand spectators along Mountain Road near Watchung Hills. G Orlando of Empire City Cycle Club, New York won in 1 04 50 2 5, beating John Struber by a narrow margin.
The Long Branch Bicycle Club held a day of events with crashes and bruises reported. Ray Borden won the three-fourths mile and the handicap six miles with Huhn second and Miller third. P C Hedrick took the half mile and led the club half mile, with John ee and J Johnson placing second and third.
In New Haven on May 30 F L Kramer failed to win either the half mile or five mile professional events. Bargett of Buffalo won the half mile in 0 55 with a 55 yard handicap. Norman Anderson of Denmark won the five mile open in 10 48. J Magine of Newark took the three mile amateur in 6 44 38 6. Fred Hill of Boston won the two mile professional in 4 27.
Wesleyan captured the meet’s top score with 24 points at Trinity Field in Hartford. Robson won the 100 yard intercollegiate dash in 10.25 seconds, Wood topped the 4410 yard dash for Wesleyan, Robson also won the open 440 yard dash, Wagoner of Yale won the polo vault at 11 feet 6 inches, and Drew of Trojan A C won the special 100 yard dash for Trojan A C and New York A C in 10.25 seconds.
Rhode Island State College defeated New Hampshire State College in a track meet at Kingston led by strong performances across events. Rhode Island posted a final score of 41 to New Hampshire’s 7.
Bridgeport report on the Automobile Dealers Association hill climbing contests at Snake Hill notes thousands observed but only twelve cars and three motorcycles entered. Legal issues over hill access reduced participation and left some events unrepresented.
Eight horses contest the Brooklyn Handicap at one mile and a quarter on opening day at Gravesend. Fitzherbert tops the weights after last year’s champions and a strong field includes Firestone Diana Ken Glucose Prince Imperial Fashion Plate Czar and Olambala with rider and odds listed for the $6000 race.
Frederick C. Inman and Walter L. Pate won advancing to the Felipe Challenge Cup singles semi finals on the clay courts of the New York Lawn Tennis Club at 123d Street and Manhattan Avenue. The rounds show numerous matches with multiple defaults and decisive scores as the field narrows.
Eastern doubles champions Nat C. Niles and Arthur Dabney advance to the Massachusetts State doubles championship final at Brae Burn Club after a three set semi final win over the Johnson brothers. Sulloway and Rhodes reach final by defeating Putnam and Holt.
In New Haven on May 30 Yale defeated Harvard 7 to 2 in the annual dual tennis match. Yale won five of six singles and two of three doubles led by Holden Stevens Brett and others. Harvard singles winner Adams and doubles pairs were toppled.
Eighth National Championships for stock cars from 160 to 600 cubic inches at 5 and 10 miles capped the Indianapolis Speedway carnival. Winners included Oldfield, Aitken, Dawson, and Harroun, with records crushed by several drivers amid a crowd near 20,000. Harroun’s Marmon Yellow Jacket suffered a wreck after a high-speed tire burst while pursuing the 50-mile race, which he won with Dawson second and Fox third.
Packey McFarland of Chicago and Freddie Welsh the British lightweight champion fought twenty rounds to a draw at the National Sporting Club in London. Welsh, England’s champion but American by birth, led early but McFarland dominated the bout, winning rounds and pressuring Welsh until the verdict drew hostility from the crowd. The purse stood at 6500 dollars with a 1000 dollar side bet.
Jack Johnson drew a large crowd on the San Francisco beach in May weighing 215 pounds after four rounds with Cotton three with Crtler and one with Dave Mills. Reports say Al Kaufman would spar Johnson tomorrow and Billy Delaney would follow at the Seal Rock House as Delaney and Kaufman head to Harbin Springs for two weeks.
The Fairmont Athletic Club replaces Jack Goodman with Joe Bedell after Jem Driscoll cancels his bout. Bedell recently defeated Frank Picat in a notable public appearance. Young Ahearn and Chick Murray are set for the semi final.
Seventh Regiment lawn tennis team defeated West Point 4 singles and 2 doubles in a mixed contest at West Point. Merrill Hall beat Bethel 6-3, Bryan beat Lenton 5-1, Fitch defeated Honeycutt 6-3 8-8, Cragin beat Mitchell 6-3 6-1. In doubles Cragin and King Smith beat Bethel and Carson 6-4 8-3, Bryan and Clark beat Sen and Honeycutt 6-4 6-4.
Matt Mc Grath of the Irish-American Athletic Club of New York broke the world record by one quarter inch with a 16 feet 1 inch throw in an exhibition at the A. O. H. games in Philadelphia. His best competitive throw was 16 feet.
Gustave Ljungstrom of Sweden won the 15 mile race at Wheeling Fair Grounds track in 1 hour 23 minutes 41 seconds, missing his own record by 2 minutes 21 seconds. Johansen of Sweden finished second, with St Yves of France, Bruce of Ireland, Dineen of Boston, Frank Smith of Wheeling, McClelland of Pittsburgh, and Kern of Germany following in order.
South Norwalk Connecticut May 80 Lewis Tewanini of Carlisle School won a twelve mile road race at Roton Point under St Peter's Council Knights of Columbus finishing twelve minutes ahead of Frank Masterson Mohawk Athletic Club Thunderstorm interrupted the event with heavy rain and lightning.
Mrs John Welch of San Francisco reports her sixteen year old son Eugene suffered ten days with an ulcerated sore throat. After using Murray's Lotion as a gargle, his throat improved within three hours and was nearly clear. The letter promotes the Murray Chemical Co product with endorsements from a local resident.
