Passengers awakened in nightclothes rushed to deck as lifeboats filled. Admiral Fletcher dispatches five battleships to aid two damaged vessels. Rescue ships escort the Ryndam convoy into New York after voyagers are taken off at Cuneo and returned aboard.
The passenger Martha Daly reports waking to a ship sinking during the Ryndam incident off South Carolina. Lifeboats were launched calmly as the 505 ships including the South Carolina, Louisiana, Kansas, Michigan rushed to assist. The South Carolina rescued passengers from the Cuneo, with one injured man noted.
In dense dawn fog the Holland America liner Ryndam collided with the Joseph J. Cuneo off Nantucket Shoals. Passengers awakened by alarms faced a rapidly flooding ship as the Cuneo stood by to render aid and lifeboats were lowered amid chaos and dim emergency lights.

CROOKHAVEN Ireland May 26 A submarine was seen off the southern coast near Barley Cove ten miles from Fastnet. A steamer near Crookhaven was sighted about 9 o clock before 9 and gun reports were heard as the craft moved toward the lighthouse. Residents fired at the conning tower, the submarine dived and reappeared, then vanished after further shots.
Washington awaits Nebraskan incident details as officials weigh whether a German submarine attacked the American steamer. Conflicting dispatches from London indicate torpedoing possible, but officials draw no firm conclusion while facts are gathered.
A Constantinople dispatch reports the British battleship Triumph was torpedoed and sunk in seven minutes off Ari Burnu in the Dardanelles. Most officers and men were saved, and the submarine’s nationality remains uncertain though German subs are suspected. The loss follows other major Allied naval disasters in the Gallipoli area.

Paris May 24 Our aviators report successes in aerial combat and strikes on German positions. A German plane over Paris engaged a squadron. bombs on Villenoy failed. French aeroplanes downed a four-bomb craft near Braisne. two German flyers killed. May 20 raids by our air force hit Hervilly Grand-Foueil St Quentin stations Douai rail depots. A French pilot received the Military Medal and an officer-observer was promoted.
Aerial raids targeted Ghent's S J Pierre station and Seheldt bridge, a vital link for Bruges and Ostend traffic. Bombs hit main arches, creating a large breach, and damaged tracks, station buildings, and stores.
A May report from London notes M. Sazonoff said Austria and Germany sought separate peace talks. Germany and Austria aimed to split the Triple Alliance, courting Russia and France, with Britain initially unlikely to break with the Allies. Italy’s pledge to the Tripartite Pact followed these overtures.
London, May 26. Archbishops Canterbury and York issue a joint pastoral letter to be read June 6 urging all in church and nation to unite in sacrifice for the war. Italian aviators bombarded Monfalcone while Austrians destroy bridges and retreat across the Alps. Prisoners taken include Poles and a Trentino sergeant claiming allegiance to Italy.
Austrian Official Bulletin reports easy victories in front line skirmishes on the Italian border. Vienna May 6 issued tonight details operations on the Italian frontiers with brief statements of enemy detachment actions and modest Austrian success. The bulletin notes scattered engagements as Austrian forces advance with limited resistance.
