The State Department said American Consul Adams in Dublin reported Jeremiah C. Lynch, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was sentenced to ten years for complicity in the Irish revolt. Lynch had faced a death sentence but was saved by hours. The case involved intervention from President and Prime Minister Asquith via cables. A second message noted John J. Carlstrom and MacGordon completed 416 miles in 4 hours 1 minute and 4 hours 46 minutes respectively amid a thunderstorm and navigational delays.
Berlin reports heavy German assaults at Dead Man Hill northwest of Verdun with gains on northern slopes and strengthened positions along Hill 304 and Le Mort Homme. French counterattacks, artillery barrages, and air battles figure prominently as fighting spreads to Avocourt, Hill 287, and the Yser Canal region with gas and raiding actions further complicating the front.
Washington reports the Sussex was torpedoed by German submarine U-18 under Lieutenant Otto Steinbrink. The State Department says the facts came from an Entente ally and from a captured crew in allied waters. Officials seek details of the punishment imposed on the submarine commander.
Paris dispatch reports President Camille de Coppet stating Switzerland would mobilize all forces if any belligerent crosses the Porentruy salient. One seaplane downed off the Belgian coast. one soldier, a woman, and a seaman injured. a public house wrecked. some windows broken. Remaining bombs caused further damage while raiders departed. Berlin claims naval air squadron bombs on Dover Deal Ramsgate Broadstairs Margate with fires and explosions, heavily shelled but unscathed.
Paris reports the Temps says Pope Benedict plans mediation with President Wilson in a future peace conference. Germany claims two peace offers were rejected by Poincaré at Nancy, and France insists only an Entente victory peace will be accepted, closing doors to meddling mediators.
Vienna reports Italian forces ejected from Santo Ridge southeast of Rovereto with Austrian counts of prisoners and materiel. Crown Prince Archduke Charles Francis’s forces push Italians toward the border in Tyrol amid heavy mountain fighting and artillery bombardments across the Asiago and Terragnolo fronts.
