The Free List bill cleared the House 236 to 109 after a day of near nonstop debate. Democrats united for passage while Republicans forced hundreds of amendments, most of which were germane to the bill and ultimately rejected.
Panic erupted in a motion theatre when cries of fire were followed by six gunshots causing a rush to exits. Samuel Orbach, the owner, identified Daniel Lambert as one of six men who forced entry without paying. Lambert faced disorderly conduct charges and was held on bail while Orbach blamed a neighborhood gang for the disturbance.
Newburg New York May 8 Deputy Marshal Joseph J Kumb served twenty one Newburg men summonses to appear before Commissioner Shields in New York on Monday June 5 to show cause why an injunction against them should not be permanent and to punish them for selling or renting commutation tickets on the West Shore Road between Newburg and New York. The company offered two tickets a fifty trip ticket at 40 dollars and a daily run ticket thirty one round trips for 14 15 dollars. Some purchasers passed tickets at 82 per round trip while the West Shore charged 2 50. Detectives have been gathering evidence for a month. Some church groups said buying tickets from the Secretary would help their treasury. Findings show the company had a temporary injunction.

Tokyo dispatch reports Yamagata, capital of Yamagata Prefecture, engulfed in flames with about 1,000 houses destroyed. The blaze includes the prefectural building, banks, schools, and the courthouse. Yamagata, a commercial town about thirty miles from Sendai, houses around 45,000 people.
In White Plains on May 8, Justice Morschauser granted Arlene Ely McNeir a divorce from Burrows McNeir and awarded custody of their two daughters.
