Fury of Fire Overpowers Pier Blaze at East River

A major fire on the Joy Line pier and the Terry & Tench construction pier near Pike Street and the East River burned from 1 AM through the day, sending more than fifty firefighters to St. Gregory's Hospital for smoke and eye injuries. Fireboats couldn't reach the blaze as asphalt and creosote fed the inferno, forcing crews into improvised small boats to fight the inverted furnace amid rising tides. By midnight the construction pier and superstructure were largely destroyed, with heavy losses to freight and equipment.
