Musical Art Society closes fifteenth season at Carnegie Hall
The Musical Art Society finished its fifteenth season with a second Carnegie Hall concert before a large audience. The program revisited significant choral works from the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, including Palestrina Stabat Mater, Lassus motet, and Gabrieli Jubilate Deo, with Damrosch guiding two choirs for antiphonal effects and Loeffler By the Waters of Babylon receiving particular praise for color and finish. The program also featured Brahms Gypsy Songs Op 112 with strong contrast and an Encore-leaning Nachtgebet and Fletcher’s Moonlight Sleeps, though some felt the modern pieces lacked broader spirit.
