Two large steamers the Yale of the Boston Line and the Middletown of the Hartford Line collided while racing through Hell Gate in a strong ebb. Passengers crowded decks and dined as the ships scraped rocks along the shore and damaged each other’s hulls above the water line, but both boats continued toward the Sound.
In Havana on June 27 Congressman Antonio San Miguel of Pinar del Rio narrowly escaped a fatal shot in the Congress lobby. In St Louis on June 27 Government rail cases against the Western Trunk Line Committee ended as United States District Attorney Charles H Houts asked for dismissal of the injunction suit. Judge Dyer who signed the restraining order at Hannibal ordered the suit dismissed.
In Kingston New York on June 27 three Italian laborers quarrelled over a pretty Italian girl and agreed to a three cornered fight at the Catskill Aqueduct High Falls. They fought with knives. Michael Rusinia is gravely wounded possibly dying. Frank Siskos is badly disfigured. Frank Holuka escaped unharmed and hopes to marry if he avoids prison. He faces assault charges.
The jury in the Willard N. Peck perjury case, former secretary of the People's Mutual Life Insurance Association and League, failed to reach a verdict and was discharged. The panel stood eleven for conviction and one for acquittal after being out since Saturday afternoon. Peck had sworn in a State Insurance Department examination that his contract with the company was a valid claim, knowing the contracts had no financial value.
Alfred C. Bruce of Chilgress Texas ran away from his coaching school in Annapolis on Saturday with Miss Leona Meade and wed her at Towson near Baltimore. He had just completed the third entrance test and did not wait for Academic Board approval. The couple have not returned to Annapolis. Bruce left the Navy for marriage and the Navy forbids midshipmen to marry until two years after graduation. The elopement follows another recent case involving a Naval Academy candidate.
Indications show all New York City lines will suspend advanced commutation rates to Aug 1 per Inter-State Commerce Commission. Erie Railroad refused the postponement, leading to a temporary suspension of its rates. later talks reopened with Erie likely to revoke the order after consenting to submit the matter to the commission.
A two car shuttle on the Third Avenue elevated between Forty-second Street and Grand Central smashed into bumpers at Grand Central at 1 PM. Motorman Thomas F Howley kept control but trains slipped. Passengers including William O'Mara Michael Ellery John Murphy and Policeman Harry Schrutter were bruised with Schrutter reporting a spinal injury.
In Boston on June 27 Judge Richardson granted a divorce to Mrs Cornell Peabody King wife of Thomas King a New York clubman on grounds of intoxication. Mrs King retains custody of their two year old daughter Cornelia Maven King and the father will visit once a month. Alimony set at ten dollars weekly. Mr King denied being a drunkard. Wentworth Lacon and others cleared of charges.
John B. Lombard former Town Treasurer of Framingham was sentenced in Middlesex County Superior Criminal Court to not less than ten nor more than fifteen years in State Prison for forging town notes aggregating £300 000 over ten years. The judge declined clemency citing the gravity of the offense. Lombard collapsed when the sentence was read.
The engineers in the yards of the Philadelphia and Reading Railway will receive a wage increase to 40 cents an hour and firemen to 20 cents after conferences with General Manager Dice concluded. The final road wage rates were not announced.

In Hastings New York a man named Frank Springsteel stopped a New York City work car with a pistol and demanded its tow to Dobbs Ferry. He and an accomplice were arrested after a scuffle with Chief Clerk and police. Springsteel was paroled to Judge Hogan while awaiting further actions.
George H. Parker, fiscal agent for United Wireless Telegraph Company west of the Mississippi, was arrested in Seattle on a federal warrant alleging use of misrepresentation to sell stock. He posted bond and faces connections to recent New York arrests of company executives.
