Alfred D. Howard editor of The Englewood Star and The Leonia Star was found dead beneath a mattress in a burning Broad Avenue house in Leonia. The fire started early yesterday. Howard had entered late Sunday to prepare the building for his wife. He was 54, born in Toronto, and had a long career at The Tribune, The Press, The Herald, and The Tri bune. Survived by his wife and daughter Clara Howard Barnard College graduate and teacher.

At Coney Island yesterday two bathers died. William Kader, 20, of 2,872 West Third Street, disappeared while swimming near Ocean Parkway as rain fell and a crowd watched. Lifesavers later retrieved another drowning victim about 200 feet offshore after cries for help. he died despite aid. The second body was not identified.

Two Killed When Auto Is Struck by Engine at Crossing
At Lincoln New Jersey a collision at a railroad crossing left three aboard an automobile dead or seriously injured. Officer Eugene Nauheim of New York and Rev Nathaniel N Foster of Princeton were among the injured. The chauffeur and Mrs Zucker of Pelham Manor were also involved. T H Snider a Cincinnati catsup maker and his wife were killed when their car was hit by an express train at a Lake Shore crossing near Harbor Creek Pennsylvania. Miss Ethel Stanton the Snider daughter was injured and the chauffeur Arthur Leet escaped. The coroner ordered an inquest.
