Quiet Start to Roosevelt Era Taft Convention in Chicago

The fourteenth Republican National Convention opened in the Coliseum with about 1,000 delegates and heavy security. The mood was somber and largely disengaged, as speakers including Senator Julius C Burrows and notable guests spoke amid muted applause and rare bursts focused on Roosevelt and court powers. The session ended after adjournment until noon the next day, with debates on representation and party platform to follow.
