Underwriters in Court Fire Insurance Case Hearings Ordered

Justice Bischoff directs New York Fire Insurance Exchange and its officers to show cause on June 22 why a writ should not issue enjoining their actions. The suit, brought by Moses Tanenbaum of I Tanenbaum Son & Co, alleges interference with Tanenbaum’s brokerage and restraint of trade in fire insurance within the Exchange’s area. The Exchange leaders, including Thomas Belfield, Henry Fless, Elijah Kennedy, John Washburn, and J Montgomery Hare, face accusations of collusion to deny customary brokerage and equal privileges to Tanenbaum’s firm.

Last American brig Telos vanishes from Bangor fleet

The Telos built in Crosby's yard in 1883 is the last brig rig vessel owned in Bangor. Brigs, once common at 500 to 600 tons, have faded with American foreign trade, as few new square rigs are built and the rig already nears obsolescence. Barkentine and bark constructions decline, while full-rigged ships survive in Bath for long-distance steel trades.
