Smith College Students Expurgate Ibsen Play The Pretenders
Smith College seniors stage Ibsen drama The Pretenders amid controversy and edits by a faculty panel. The performance, attended by parents and alumnae, trims key characters and sensual elements, replacing parts to present a ladylike version while preserving plot.
Ibsen and The Tempest Talk in Alum Circle
An alum group recalls Ibsen and explains why The Tempest was not chosen due to sailors' chorus. A playful exchange notes Proxy’s influence and draping concerns. A graduate questions the drama while a young girl prefers the actors to the play.
