Submarine signaling demo links bells to ships at Sandy Hook
A Times observer witnessed a submarine signaling demonstration at Sandy Hook showing how a bell on the lightship transmits warning to distant steamers via submarine telephone. The apparatus, developed by Elisha Gray and Arthur Mundy, uses water as the transmitting medium and relays five second intervals of bell notes. The system, installed on the Maine and Alabama and planned for the Missouri and West Virginia, is Newport coastwide with several lines adopting it.
