International Canoe Races May Follow South African Peace
The prospect of war ending in South Africa could lead to international canoe races on Gravesend Bay next August between F Kendall Howard, current British champion, and a challenger chosen by the New York Canoe Club for the International Challenge Cup. Howard holds the Royal Canoe Club of London cup and defended it last season against Herman Murphy. If hostilities end, Howard plans to race for the New York Cup due to his Natal business interests. The New York Cup has a long history since 1885 with six defenses, three challengers English and Canadian, and is open to any regular canoe club outside the United States.
