Roofside Shakespeare on a crowded NYC roof
Julius N. Hopp and the Wage Earners Theater League staged a free performance atop Public School 64 on Ninth Street. The crowd of about 1,500 on the roof and 3,000 nearby jammed the scene as voices fought background street noise while actors recited fragments from Romeo and Juliet and other works. Some audience members enjoyed the quartet and portions of Gunga Din, but the overall event suffered from acoustics, safety concerns, and inaudible announcements.
