A Pere Marquette excursion from Ionia to Detroit collided with a westbound freight near Salem, killing 31 and injuring over 70. The elevencar passenger train carried Ionia shop workers and families. bodies and injured were sent to Ionia Detroit and Saginaw area hospitals as crews relieved the wreckage.
Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt arrived on the White Star liner Celtic from England where he helped arrange the International Horse Show in London. He toured Newport aboard the Colonia, leased for four months, and spoke of his show horses winning five first prizes and many ribbons. He planned to show in Long Branch and hinted at a road coach venture between New York and Ardsley.

Stamford Connecticut July 20 Mrs Byrd Wenman daughter of John T Williams owner of the Williams Building New York fought off a savage watch dog threatening her Pomeranian on the Stamford Yacht Club pier. First mate Munroe Biggs of the Embla beat the mastiff away with an oar. The dog will likely be killed.
A New York bound steamer the St. Croix narrowly escaped disaster near Watch Hill mirroring the Larchmont sinking last winter. The two-masted Edith FB. Dennis struck the St. Croix in dense fog at 8:15 AM tearing a bow hole above the water line. Passengers rushed from berths half clothed as officers launched lifeboats. both ships reached Providence by 10 AM.
Virginia authorities plan a determined fight to keep the two cent passenger rate order of the State Corporation Commission valid. An injunction blocking enforcement was granted to railroads by Judge Jeter C. Pritchard. A Monday conference with Gov Swanson, the Attorney General, and the commission seeks a plan to defy the injunction and appeal to the highest court.
Des Moines Iowa July 20 a young clerk was arrested on a misdemeanor for annoying people on the street after Judge C A Bishop of the Iowa Supreme Court says the man winked at his wife Mrs Bishop Bennett posted bond and was released while Judge Mathis dismissed the case. The judge later admonished the youth asserting it may be mistaken identity and urged proper conduct.
A fifty foot white grampus whale, weighing about fifteen tons, was towed to the beach near Galilee New Jersey after being found wounded near the breakers. Capt. Nelson Lockwood Jr and a crew aboard a dory retrieved it. the whale died in the surf. Spectators from Long Branch and Seabright viewed the creature, which may be linked by some to the Admiral Sampson collision. The whale will be kept at Galilee for several days before disposition.
Albany July 20 Gov Hughes signed the Molineux bill amending the Penal Code to require police to return all photographs or Bertillon measurements and all copies to the arrestee upon dismissal of criminal actions. Roland B Molineux pressed for the records from his murder case and acquittal.

Riot underway at United Railroads car barns at Twenty ninth and Mission Streets. Four men reported shot as barn burns. Fire Department and all police reserves rushed to the scene.
Gerald and Herbert Sheran ten year old twins were swept into a sewer and drowned after heavy rain. Witness James Bowles, fourteen, saw them enter the rising ditch water. Their bodies were recovered later from the Schuylkill River near the railroad area.
Abby Frances Hamlin Abbott wife of Rev. Dr. Lyman Abbott died of pneumonia last Friday in Hildesheim Germany at age sixty nine. Daughter of Hannibal Hamlin of Maine Lincoln’s first Vice President she married Lyman Abbott on Oct 14 1857. She would have celebrated a golden wedding next October. She left New York last June with her husband and children. She had four sons and two daughters.
Ex president Grover Cleveland at Princeton is confined to his room after a gout attack but physician Dr. Joseph D. Bryant said there is nothing serious and there is no cause for alarm.
Nathaniel C Harrington a theatrical agent living at the Hotel Braddock reported his ten year old son Harper missing from the West 152d Street Station last night. The boy with a habit of wandering had been placed in Delafield Military Academy in Wisconsin and recently returned home without explanation of his travel to New York.
G Pitman Smith attorney for the Wabash Railroad files a 400 million dollar mortgage to secure first refunding and extension bonds for fifty years. The lien covers nearly all Wabash indebtedness and will be recorded in Missouri and Iowa counties the line serves, leaving about 63 thousand dollars for improvements.
In Lexington July 20 report states Prof J D Clarke advocates a cooperative plan backed by the American Society of Equity. Aimed at Lexington Covington Louisville and Henderson factories with 185 million pounds of Burley annually. Capitalization 31000000 with half paid in tobacco. Society claims control of 60 percent of last year’s crop and 85 percent of this year’s, ensuring raw material.
In Oliver Branch Mississippi thirty black residents lynched Andrew Trice, alleged killer of Susie Williams. Williams was found slain with an axe near Trice’s home and an inquest preceded a held over court. Nightfall mob closed in and captured Trice despite warnings.
