Mrs Florence Carman, amid manslaughter charges in the Bailey death, tells reporters she was unfairly treated by officials. She accuses Detective Burns of pressuring witnesses and says Farrell was deliberately planted in the case as she faces trial in Mineola.
Ignacio Martinez, a recent returnee from Europe, hid in the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City and attempted to steal six paintings including four Murillos. He started a fire to cover the theft but was stopped by caretakers. Martinez confessed and offered the works as evidence. He planned to sell them in New York or Europe for about 6 000 000 pesos.
Special to The New York Times. President Wilson, feeling better, plans to join his family in Allenhurst, New Jersey, but secretary Tumulty insists he rest. Tumulty orders the president to remain at the White House and cancels all engagements for the day.

A Boston music student Miss Annie Burrans her sister Mrs Minnie Mills and Mills two daughters and niece Dorothy Burrans all drowned in a Naticook Lake boat accident near Manchester New Hampshire. The group while Annie swam and others rowed, the boat capsized as Annie grabbed the stern. Fred Burrans nearly died searching for the bodies and recovered the other victims. Bodies were found near shore and in deeper water.
Edwin Hastings of Hanover driving fifty miles per hour was struck by lightning as cattle stampede near West Orange. A bull vaulted a fence and charged the speeding car, which crashed down an embankment. Hastings sheltered behind trees and an abandoned well until a farmer with a pitchfork freed him and the vehicle and bull suffered little damage.
A deer, likely from New Jersey, was struck and killed by a car on Broadway near 254th Street. Patrolman Logan found the animal with a broken neck and leg. zoo curator Ditmars said none were missing. Police believe the deer swam the Hudson and was confused by signal lights amid active street work.

Pittsburgh july 17 independents in the tin plate trade and the western bar iron association with the Amal gamated Association of Iron Steel and Tin Workers have signed wage scales securing peace for another year. Puddling wages rise 25 cents from 5.25 to 5.50 and other rates stay the same. Over fifty concerns and thousands of workers are affected nationwide.
Detectives in Queens Borough arrested Patrick J. McGurdy, 25, of Brooklyn, for the murder of Benjamin Clare in Long Island City. McGurdy was arraigned before Magistrate Fitch and jailed in LIC. Two men were connected to the shooting. James Cassidy was previously indicted but acquitted.

Buenos Aires reports that John G. A. Leishman former American Ambassador to Germany is believed seeking to purchase Argentine warships for Turkey. He is leaving for Europe to pursue the matter.
The Westinghouse Machine Company received an order from the Edison Electric Illuminating Company of Brooklyn for the largest single unit steam turbine engine ever built. The 32,000 horsepower turbine will generate electric light and power.
