A Great Procession to the Cathedral forms with over 5,000 in line. Airplanes scatter roses as officials and ambassadors attend the ceremonies honoring Major Mitchel. President Wilson and foreign envoys send representatives to the funeral.
A New York City funeral for former Mayor John Purroy Mitchel drew thousands from City Hall to St Patrick's Cathedral with officers of state and representatives of President Wilson in attendance. The day featured military honors, a flower-dropping aerial flyover, and crowds across City Hall Park Washington Square and Fifth Avenue. Roosevelt Whitman and foreign ambassadors joined the procession amid a somber, citywide tribute marking Mitchel's death.
Four Austro-Hungarian subjects are under arrest in the United States as part of a Justice Department probe into enemy activities before and after the war entry. Allied dispatches describe Italian troops advancing in Albania from Vagusa to Semeni and reaching Fieri with British support. Austrian forces in Albania form a new defensive line after repulsing a French detachment in the Devoli Valley.
The Telegraaf reports Germany has demanded 60 000 cows 3 000 horses 10 000 tons cheese 2 000 000 eggs 150 tons fatty products poultry 3 000 tons sugar and 200 000 hides plus quinine and an extra 7 000 000 florins monthly credit from Dutch colonies. The paper says the demands arise from a district inquiry and must be met before any concessions are discussed.
The New York Times reports a British patrol boat rescued a German submarine crew after discovering four British seamen tied as prisoners aboard the derelict U boat. The German commander claimed all aboard were safe, but tapping indicated otherwise, revealing the captives and showing German intent to abandon the men.
