San Francisco July 8 Mayor Schmitz convicted of extortion received a five year prison term from Judge Dunne. The courtroom erupted as the verdict was read with cheers and chaos. Schmitz protested the judge’s remarks but the sentence stood.
Sir Caspar Purdon Clarke, in Paris, questions Italian customs claims of a search on the yacht Corsair at Venice. He believes Morgan’s reputation would deter smuggling and cites the Ascoli cope return as proof. He notes the Hentschel collection for the Metropolitan Museum of Art is valued around 1 million dollars and shows indignation at the Louvre vandalism on Le Deluge.
Irvin Belford of Cleveland arrived in New York as Special Master to compel testimony from J. P. Morgan and others in the Ohio Savings Bank suit challenging the Toledo Railway & Terminal Company sale to Morgan led bondholders. Petitions claim a conspiracy to bid in at a low price, with bonds planned at 6 million backed by Vanderbilt lines and other Toledo entrants.

The Fifth Avenue residence of Henry H Cook near Madison Avenue is likely to be purchased by James B Duke for his bride Mrs William Inman of Atlanta. The deal valued around 1.6 million proceeds as Duke plans a North Fifth Avenue mansion and social life in New York. The couple plan to marry abroad and spend the summer touring Europe before settling in the city.
Charles E Proctor’s yacht Cavalier ran ashore on the breakwater off Point Judith in fog on her inaugural trip. Tug Alert freed her with minor damage, and she was towed to Newport for repairs at City Island the next morning. The 185 foot steel cruiser, built at City Island, launched six weeks ago and delivered June 15, features triple screws and 15 mph speed.
Passengers aboard the Admirall Sampson arriving from Jamaica witnessed a whale rammed by the steamer. Capt. Washington reports Vice President Fairbanks delighted by a plunge in Yellowstone Lake. His supporters say it proves his fondness for water and may counter claims about the cocktail canard. Opponents scoff that the stunt was hurried and indecorous, while backers insist he appears in true light to the nation.

The vessel Ben Hur burst into flames and was burned to the water’s edge but nearby Twilight and another launch rescued the party and brought them to Trenton.

Roosevelt's bulldog Pete wandered away from the White House and was found by Policeman Powell on Twenty first Street Northwest near E Street. Pete, muddy and wary at first, wagged to Powell and returned with the messenger Robert Anderson expressing gladness at his return.

A letter to his manager says he will avoid exertion per doctors orders for a year and hopes to return to the United States in late autumn then act the following season. The strain of his Peer Gynt performance is blamed for the breakdown.
